#1619, "Scary appt today---Could use some support please!"

I am 28 weeks and 4 days today with GGB. I have thankfully had a very easy and uneventful pregnancy so far. I work full time as a RN in an ob/gyn clinic and even that has been going fairly well. Starting last week, I started seeing the peri twice a week for non stress tests. If the non stress tests were not reactive, then I would have a bio physical profile.

Anyway, today I went in for my non stress test and they ended up needing a bio physical because the 2 of the babies were sleepy. That all ended up fine, and each baby looked great. Then he did a manual exam and found that my cervix had changed. I am 50% effaced and the external os is open. My internal os is closed and I am not dilated. I also was not having any contractions on the non stress test. I was completely floored and was not expecting any cervical change. I am now off of work for the next two weeks at least. If my cervix stays unchanged then the peri may let me go to half days only if I want to.

My main concern is of course not work at all and I do not care if I go back or not. I am just very scared now and was wanting some support. I have had it in my head that I am superwoman and was not ready at all to hear today's news. Pretty unrealistic, but I was trying to keep that positive attitude going! I am looking forward to some time at home and keep these little ones cooking! You'll probably be seeing more of me now!!

Hang in there! You are almost 29 weeks! 2 weeks of bedrest sounds like a dream to me right now. hee hee It's great that you have come this far with no bedrest or any complications. Just enjoy the napping, reading, watching movies..... it'll all be a thing of the past once those babies arrive! Sending you some hugs and tell those babies to stay put!

YIKES! I bet you were scared, alright!!!

Okay, Superwoman, it's time to make the super sacrifice and put yourself on bedrest for the duration of your pregnancy. I can tell that you know this in your heart, but you are probably reluctant to hang up the keys to the invisible plane, take off your special belt, and put down your magic lasso. LOL!

Your babies need to stay inside you for a lot longer than this. Were I in your position, I'd not go back to work at all until after the babies are born. Many women here have been able to keep their babies gestating for several additional weeks/months by staying on strict bedrest after their cervix changed dramatically. There is a good chance you can do it, too!

While I'm really sorry you had such a tramatic fright today, it will be fun to have you here more! Another voice at the BB is a good thing! Let us help you think of ways to keep you occupied!

Hi Shiloh,
I know how difficult that it is to feel scared but be thankful that you are at home and not in the hospital. I thought that I would let you know that my trio was born at 28w1d and they are healthy happy 10 month olds now. Yes it was scary to have to deliver them so early
(I developed pre-eclampsia and they had to deliver the babies for my health) but they are doing just great and we have no problems. Hang in there and take care of your little ones!

Hello!

My dw also is a RN -- she just changed jobs...after 17 years at a hospital maternity department, she now works at a ped. office. Less stress and "normal" hours/days.

She was off of work by 24 weeks and on modified bed rest (you'd have to tie her down to keep her in one place). It was quite a surprise to have the boys arrive at 28.5 weeks. Years of training and experience in nursing and midwifery, healthy, everything researched -- but the boys decided to come early anyway. What can a body do? Though I wish that the Boys' tendency towards being early would somehow manifest itself in them getting off to school on time.

I vote that it is time for you to put your feet up, with healthy munchies at your side.

shiloh- sounds like you are still doing ok. working to 28 weeks full time is probably unusual. i didnt' have bedrest but i sure was not getting up and going to work everyday at 28 weeks. i think i had the superwoman reality check a little earlier than you did- your body is possibly telling you to slow down and take care. which is sounds like you are ready and able to do. even if the peri offers half days at 30 weeks- i would say thanks but no thanks. your body is only going to get more physically stressed from here on out why add work if you don't need to. it is funny but my non stress tests revealed at least three or four contractions her hour but they were not working contractions because i went to 36 weeks and delivered then only because my blood pressure was creeping up and the peri said 36 weeks was as good as it would get, lets avoid potential problems. relax. rest, enjoy. i am a bit envious as i run after 1 year olds all day. read a bunch of great books. terri

hi shiloh
i dont know if i can offer more insight, but i can encourage you. congratulations to making it to 28 weeks, that is a huge milestone. a two week bedrest will be okay, you can still bark commands from your bedside and have others (friends, dh, rellies) tend to what needs to be done. you've certainly got the right attitude about going back to work.

i can see why you were scared, who can blame you. it was a bullet out of the blue. but just because your cervix is dilating, etc, doesn't mean your gorgeous G G B will be born tomorrow. by being proactive and staying off your tootsies, you will be able to hold off delivery for a while longer than if you did not hit the bed!

you've got a great attitude. xo

Drink lots of water and just lay there. It sucks, but in the end you will be happy! You are doing a great job, so keep it up. You can do it!
