#116, "dr. visits, shots, synagis"

I just looked at Karla's blog - thanks Karla! - and saw that at her dr. appt, 3 nurses came in to give the babies shots at the same time.

anyone else have that experience?

when I go just for a nurses visit for shots it takes 2 hours. one nurse. she weighs/measures/blood pressure each baby, then we go in the room, then I wait there forever until she comes back with the shots.

and Synagis, what a headache. we have been on the phone again and again with insurance co, with the pedi practice, with a home nurse agency... tomorrow we'll find out if the latest nurse agency can come and give them the synagis tomorrow or Tues. Its already waiting at the pedi office. the communication about the process has been awful. we love our pedi but not the way the office works.

anyone have suggestions about how to find the right practice? do they give you a hard time about bringing all 3 in together? does any one have a pedi whose office understands what its like to have 3 babies at once? usually I go by myself...

Hi eema

We switched practices after a bad experience at our first pedi. We do love this new practice. They are very accomadating to multiples, our Pedi has twins and another child very close in age himself. We have never waited more than 10 min and they always have at least two nurses to help us out. I'm not sure how most practices do it but ours schedules three appts back to back. We live in an area with a ton of different offices so customer service is important to keep patients. If I were you I would try to switch practices, a two hour wait is insane with triplets. And, I can't believe they would suugest you bring them at different times!

Wow Eema..that does stink. I asked our pediatrician if he would have any problems accomodating the trio when I was pregnant...I felt it was a pretty important discussion to have...He has seen my older kiddos for years and I really like him. He can be kind of rude..tells you like it is..etc...but I like him since Im the same way.. Anyhoo..during our discussion, he said he would always give us the first appointment of the day for shot/well baby visits. If go alone, I can call from parking lot and nurses come help us in. If they are sick, (havent had to test this yet...but will today because I have two that are sicky...Ill let you know how it goes...) that I can call and when I arrive they will let me right in. He also has given me his private cell number if they get really ill....etc. I called the oncall DR yesterday..and w hile two are sicky...it wasnt bad enough I felt I needed to call him...I dont want to abuse that privilige.
Another main bonus for us is...that the nurses all come in at once to give all three babies shots simultaneously. And then they all snuggle the babies and pack them up in their carseats...
And let me preface mt last point by saying I do live in a rather small town in KY....and triplets are rare...my DR will make housecall if I find is absolutely necessary. Again..havent tested that one...and also during our conversation way back when...I jokingly mentioned only charging me one copay if I brought more than one in for illness....he said that was fine with him. WOOHOO!!
We also have a pharmacy here in town that will deliver to us. Normally they wont deliver to where we live. Its rural and about 18 miles from town...but once our DR spoke with them about me not waggng babies into a pharmacy of sick people...they agreed to deliver to us...(again...havent tested that yet either.)
I cannot imagine a 2 hour wait with triplets...YIKES!!
Edited to add---Synagis messes are insane...ours were approved and we had home health lined up..we had to wait for meds to get here...GRRR. Home health does our shots.

thanks!

I do love the pedi but this practice doesnt run that way. we picked it bc it is so convenient and we love the dr. but it is a hospital clinic so doesnt run the way a private practice would.

I already switched from a private practice bc of the convenience factor and I really like this dr. better too. the other practice had so many dr.s and ours went on vacation for 3 weeks right after their 1st appt.

I guess I need to start looking for another pedi. it sucks bc this one is 2 blocks from our home so we can walk there, and if we need to drive there is parking. we live in a major city. oh and we can get in the door! the other practice had valet but the elevator wasnt big enough for the stroller and after those 1st 2 appts I've been going by myself.

ugh, I don't want to leave this dr., she is great....but I will have to start looking...

Ok...my ped does rock...im copying an pasting my post..

Well its official..I took my little guy to DR this morning...and the DR assured me it wasnt RSV...that we havent had any confirmed cases yet...well of course leave it to Kaden..(AKA Kader Bug to get the first RSV case here)...right now were home..DR tested the other two....Kali has it as well. Kobe doesnt. How crazy is that. So...Kobe is going to be segragated...dont know how long well keep him free from it. DR said nothing we can do really..but make sure he (they) continue to eat...and breathe ok. Im just a nervous wreck. My full term DS had it years ago...and it was bad...as in on a vent airflighted to a bigger hospital bad..so Im watching the babays like a hawk.
So..has anyone elses babies gotten RSV after getting Synagis? Did the Synagis really make the babies bout with it less severe?
Im soo paranoid right now We live about 25 mintues from our podunk hospital and over an hour from a good one. DR said if he does start not eating or gets much more wheezy he will end up admitted and sent out to major hospital....GRRR
DR is trying to get us approved for a home health nurse to come check on them twice daily for remainder of week...Like that will be approved quickly thru insurance..HAHA. I am not holding my breath. So..our DR is coming ove every morning to listen to the babies before going to his office...woohoo..one perk of living in a small town...
Im hoping Kaden stays like he is and doesnt get worse.

I had the same problem I was in my ped office for 2hrs for my synagis shot too with my trio. I was by myself. My office is small and doesn't have 3 nurses. I am not sure what the solution is but I know I don't want to wait 2hrs. I am change my appt time this time to see if that make a difference. If not I may think about changing offices. Any other suggestions. I thought about weighting them myselft...

we usually get 1 nurse when we take in our quads. although, i have seen and heard the other nurses ask the one nurse "do you need any help?" so we could get two nurses to help, if need be.

we are lucky in that our pedi is a father to quads. and all, or most, of the multiples in the area go to him. i know of two other quad families that go to him and then apparently there is a quint family of all boys (out of state) that come here to be seen by him. we just lucked out.

When we went to our very first doctor visit with shots (immunizations not synagis) I asked the nurse if she was going to have someone come in and help with the shots. She kind of rolled her eyes at me and said she actually does it faster by herself. I was used to the NICU where they always had 2 nurses and they would give them in both legs at the same time so it would be done super fast. So I was a little annoyed with ped nurse. HOWEVER, holy crap was she ever right! The ped nurse is the fastest shot giver I have ever seen even when there are multiple shots. Love love love her. For well visits it takes us about 45 minutes to an hour which includes the doctor's check. Nurse weighs all 3, then doctor comes in and as she is doing her check the nurse is updating our growth charts, then as soon as the doctor leaves, the nurse is walking in the door with the shots. The hardest part for us is undressing and dressing the kids again. We are their only set of triplets so they do go out of their way to make everything super smooth and no waiting.

For synagis shots we had a nurse come to the home and it would take about 30 minutes for her to weigh each baby, call in the weights to verify the doses and give the shots. Then she would wait about 15 minutes to leave just to make sure there was no side effects.

Do you think maybe you just got a slow nurse? Is it always like that?

update,
we went for our 6 mo. dr. appt last week. I got there 10 minutes early and called from outside, the receptionist started checking us in as I unloaded the car. we went right back and started the weighing and vitals. that took 30 min. waited for dr. for 20 min. She spend about an hour with us. waited about 10 min for nurse. gave them all 3 shots each.
it was still almost 2 hours from start to finish!
