#8157, "Favorite Potty Training Undies?"

We are about to start potty training after the holidays and I've decided I don't want to use pull-up if I can avoid it. Did anyone find any training underwear that they really liked and would recommend?

Should we splurge to buy special cloth/vinyl underwear or just go with lots of cheaper regular underwear? I'd rather the house not smell like urine, so does anyone know if the cloth/vinyl undies really work?

Any info would be wonderful and a great help!

Thanks,
Tiffany

You will get many different answers to this question for training pants, but what it comes down to is....do any of your trio not care they are wet or dirty...if yes, then the special cloth vinyl trainers could be a big help and very worth their price. (rather than cleaning lots of carpet, clothes, furniture...etc.)

Our trio didn't care if wet, but did care if they were dirty. Trainers might have helped us, but due to a crazy spring and summer with lots of upheaval, we never tried it.

Good luck! I hope you are blessed with at least one early and easy trainer!

My favorites are the ones on OneStepAhead.com.
They have a terry cloth liner, with an outer shell of a moisture resistent polyester fabric, and snug gussets on the legs to prevent leaks. Very comfy for the kids, and they really didn't leak.

Things that are good to know:
Wash and dry them inside out, or they take forever to dry.
They run a size smaller than tagged, so buy a size larger than you need.

Don't use pullups except for naps and if you really need to leave the house. The kids need to be able to feel they are wet/poopy.

I bought some of the cloth/vinyl underwear and my kids reused to wear them. They are bulky and not very comfortable. We just went with thick cotton training underwear.

As for your house not smelling like urine...good luck with that. It is impossible not to expect people are going to pee on the floor while they are learning. It is just part of the process.

We used the thick cotton training underwear. It helps contain the pee if they just start to go a little, but if they full-on pee their pants it's going to be dripping down their legs. We bought some of the vinyl "covers" but ditched those after 1 day because they were so uncomfortable and also because we found they do contain the mess enough that the kids would just sit in it and we didn't know they'd had an accident right away.

Pick up some "nature's miracle" - it's an enzyme-based cleaner you can buy at most pet stores that really does eliminate pee odor from carpets, furniture, etc. Even if you go with the cloth/vinyl undies you are bound to have some accidents on the carpet or furniture eventually.

We did potty training right after Christmas and just went cold turkey and put them in underpants. The first couple days were hell, but we saw a ton of progress by the end of the third day. We used pull-ups just for naps and overnight. We called them "sleeping underpants" and took them off first thing when the kids woke up.

Good luck!
