#77, "Grandparents Divorcing....Need advice please"
|
Hi
I'm a mom to 4.5 yr old triplets and I'm trying to find out how to break the news to them that their grandparents are getting a divorce. My mother and my step father married before the triplets were born and have had a rocky marriage for the past 7 years. They have finally decided to divorce and I'm having a really hard time with figuring out how to tell my kids. Both of them are VERY involved in my kids lives. i.e. they've spent one night a week at grandma and grandpas since they were 8 months old. On top of that they always have a Sunday visit with them for a few hours. They have been asking questions, such as " where is grandpa at and when is he coming home". I think it's finally time to tell them. Do you have any suggestions? Amanda

I'm not sure that 4.5 year old kids can understand the concept of "divorce" per se. You might just tell them, "Grandma and grandpa love you all very much and that will never change. Right now they are having trouble being with each other. They will still visit with you, but not together." I'm sure they will have questions, just answer them at their level. Good luck! I totally agree with TrioDiMio...keep it simple. Make sure they understand they will still see both grandpa and grandma, just at different times (if that's the case). With my kids, who are 3.5 and 4.5, I made my divorce from my ex sound *exciting*. I would talk it up like, "I know you wish daddy was coming to our house after work tonight, but isn't it going to be so much fun to have an awesome sleepover with him this weekend." Then I talk up how fun it will be. They totally have bought into it (or so it seems) and it doesn't even phase them that daddy doesn't live here anymore.
Good luck. Sounds like they're lucky to have such involved grandparents.
