I basically got by without one for the first 9 months, or so,
but most of that time was winter or the early super
sleep-deprived stage.  I just arranged for a helper for the
occasional doctor visit.  But from 9 months on, I have been
using both my Runabout and choo choo wagon on an almost daily
basis.  I use the Runabout for walks around our neighborhood
and keep the wagon stowed in our minivan for trips anywhere
else--library, store, park, zoo, child care drop offs, you
name it.  

We also have 3 umbrella strollers (with a set of links to
hook them together) that we use for road trips or the rare
occasion when DH is available.
