I've never read the PP's book, but I absolutely agree with what she said about things seeming obvious after you get some distance from this phase.

Something I've noticed on here, too, is that some people - usually the ones who go into CIO thinking they don't want to do it or that it won't work for *their* babies - give up on CIO after 2 or 3 days. That's not enough time. It's like sending your child down the street without training wheels, watching them crash and then determining that they'll never learn to ride a bike. It took 7 days for our girls at 6 months old to go from sleeping 4-5 hours in a stretch to 10-12. I was only aiming for more than 5 hours and got double once they learned to self-soothe!

As for the OP and her feeding issues, it's been so long since the infant phase for us, but I don't think we even introduced food until a year old. If we wanted them to sleep longer at night, we made sure to get them their calories (via slightly more formula) during the day. We started adding an ounce to each day feeding and subtracting that many in the form of - eventually - their entire night feeding regimen.
