You might be surprised by trying standing. I assumed mine would learn sitting, but daycare taught them standing, and they never had issues, even when they were shorter. They'd just stand on their tip-toes. (Or a very very low stool.)

Even now, when they pee while sitting (because they're pooping) they get pee all over their pants like you describe. Yeesh!

(PS Mine have "birds" too. )
