First , a note about me. I am a CPA, MBA, and am fairly skilled with personal finance concerns. I am not an insurance agent. I do not sell any of the policies below and will not receive any benefit from any policies you purchase. I did receive several generous checks from Aflac for hospitalization that occurred during the birth of our GGGG quadruplets. In summary, I am independent of the insurance provides and know how to objectively run the numbers on the products. I am maintaining this thread so other HOM families have the opportunity to receive this much needed financial support. Our family almost missed this opportunity because there was not a concise summary of the policies.
Aflac and other insurance companies sell hospitalization insurance that pay policy holders a flat rate for each day mom or one of your babies are in the hospital. Many states have policies that are available to women who are currently pregnant.
A simple example: -You buy a policy from Aflac that pays you $100 each day you or your baby is in the hospital. -The policy costs $100 per month. -Mom is hospitalized for 10 days before the babies are delivered. I cannot find a reference statistic, but 10 days is conservative. -Triplet babies average 19 Days in the NICU. http://www.mostonline.org/facts_infants.htm
Total Hospital Days: 10 Mom 19 Baby A 19 Baby B 19 Baby C --- 67 Total Days.
If you had the example policy in place, Aflac would mail a check to you for 67 days X $100 per day = $6,700.
Final Score: Premiums Paid $100 X 12 months = $1,200 - You would pay 12 months of premiums if you bought the policies when you were 2 months pregnant and had to continue paying Aflac for 5 months after the babies were born while waiting for Aflac to process your payments. Benefits Received $6,700 Net $5,500 (This example is very conservative!)
Hospitalization Inusurance Providers:
Aflac - Aflac.com
CombinedInsurance.com http://www.combinedinsurance.com/insurance-types/accident-insurance.html
Colonial Life http://www.coloniallife.com/policies/voluntary-benefits/hospital-confinement-indemnity.asp I believe the plan "Medial Bridge" policy
I have personal experience with Aflac and many parents here on TC also have experience with Aflac. Combined Insurance and Colonial Life are newer to the community. The optimal plan would be establishing Aflac policies first and then putting Combined and Colonial Life policies into place and collect on all three! To provide information for this community, I will gladly help a few people through the process of establishing all three policies if they are willing to share their experience wtih TC. If you are pregnant with Quadruplets or more, you should definately accept this offer...
Finding and Buying Aflac Policies. Aflac products vary from state to state. You will need to research Aflac's policies in your state and buy what best fits your situation. My suggested research process: -Go to the Aflac website and print the list of all available products - http://www.aflac.com/us/en/individuals/ourpolicies.aspx -Find an Aflac agent and ask for details and applications for ALL of the policies that may remotely work. Some of the applications will explicitly exclude pregnant women but others allow pregnant women. -MOST AFLAC AGENTS RECEIVE VERY LITTLE TRAINING ON THE POLICIES THEY SELL. IF YOU TALK TO AN AFLAC AGENT WHO STATES AFLAC WILL NOT COVER PREEXISTING PREGNANCIES AND RELATED COMPLICATIONS, END THE CONVERSATION AND CALL A DIFFERENT AGENT. -Contact one of the agents listed below, as these agents have been very helpful to triplet connection families and know how to apply Aflac coverage to HOM pregnancies. -Check the Aflac coverage available through your employer or your spouse's employer. -If you have triple confirmed you cannot get decent Aflac coverage in your state, start researching adjacent states. You can buy Aflac coverage in any state, you just have to be in that state when you sign the forms. If you have to drive to another state, just think of it as your last peaceful road trip for the next 20 years.
+++ Notes about the Aflac policies we purchased in November 2007 +++
Benefit Assumptions: 1) You convert from a single insured to a family policy within 30 days of the birth of babies. 2) You purchase the highest level of coverage available and buy the extra policy riders 3) Recognize the benefits for mom are only paid due to pregnancy complications. If you simply go into labor, have a c-section, and everyone goes home in four days, Aflac will pay $0. 4) Aflac will eventually change their policies to prohibit HOM moms from receiving the large payouts. 5) The below notes were for Arizona during Fall 2007 for an existing pregnancy. Coverage changes over time, by state, and even better coverage may be available for moms who are not yet pregnant.
+++ Hospital Confinement Indemnity Policy +++ -Pays $100 per each day mom and any of the babies are in the hospital -Pays $400 bonus for each of the first 5 days mom is in the hospital. This bonus is paid only once per policy. However, Aflac does have a history of accidentally paying the bonus more than once per policy.-Pays $500 for initial hospitalization of mom and each baby -Pays $200 for a vaginal delivery or $200 for a cesarean delivery -Premiums waived once insured is in hospital for 30 days - you must submit a waiver of premium form, attached
+++ Hospital Confinement Sickness Indemnity Policy +++ -Pays $25 for each physician visit, limited to a maximum of 4 claims per year. -Pays $100 on days 1-15 and $200 on days 16-180 that each mom and any of the babies are in the hospital -Pays $750 for initial hospitalization of mom and each baby -Pays $300 for a vaginal delivery or $400 for a cesarean delivery
+++ Hospital Intensive Care Protection Insurance Policy +++ -Question 13 – Is anyone to be covered the mother or father of a child currently conceived but as yet unborn? If yes, this policy will not be issued. -Ask your agent for the Intensive Care application just to confirm the pregnancy exclusion applies in your state.
Our agent's contact details are below. I do not receive any benefit from anyone contacting her. I will say she is quite courteous on the phone, prompt with email, is able to read the policy as it is written, and can sell coverage in California.
Aflac Agents: Julie Kraus – Serves California Only 805-529-8190 (phone/fax) 805-404-9157 (cellular) julie_kraus@us.aflac.com
Angela For Texas Residents, Angela (angrae77) is an active member of triplet connection and an Aflac agent. You can contact Angela at a3_davis@us.aflac.com
If you cannot find a resonable Aflac agent in your state or Aflac products in your state are limited, get on an airplane and fly to meet with Julie or Angela and purchase a California or Texas policy. The insurance rules allow you to buy other state policies as long as you are in that state when you sign the contract. My paranoid CPA spidey sense suggests taking pictures of you and the agent signing papers at the airport.
The top hospital in the World for delivering HOMs is Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. The NICU at the hospital is operated by Phoenix Children's Hospital.
I filed partial claims with Aflac every two weeks while my wife and baby girls were in the hospital. Both Banner Good Samaritan and Phoenix Children's were able to quickly send partial bills for me to submit to Aflac.
