I haven't requested extra homework, but we have workbooks and worksheets and things where they can continue to learn at their own pace. But, I'm also not sure that this is a good idea because, again, when they go into first grade they would still be ahead on the curriculum. That's where my question really lies.

And, I had sort of the reverse experience from you: my parents were told that I should be advanced a grade and refused because my older sister had to repeat a grade and that would have left us in the same grade. I was socially older than she was and never really fit in with my classmates, and it was very difficult.

I don't want my children in the wrong place, whether that wrong place is kindergarten or first grade. And, frankly, maybe I would be better off home-schooling them since that would leave them working at their own pace. It is part of the whole dichotomy.
