#1013, "Not enough fluids for baby A"
|
My DW is at 27 weeks and we just came back from a growth sonogram and checkup. It seems that baby A's fluids are not up to where they should be and the cervix is at one cm. Baby A and Baby B are in the same sac.
The babies are 2lbs, 1 lb 11 oz and 1 lb 12 oz.
My DW's OBGYN and the high risk doc discussed courses of action: They are to rest is bed by laying on her left side and drinks tons of water. In one week come back for another check up and growth sonogram. This could build the fluid levels back up to where they should be.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. We are kinda freaking out but know that its all a part of God's plan.
Thanks.

I went through the same thing. Although each one of my babies was in a different sack, around 28 weeks my baby C had slightly low fluid/less than A and B. They said just to keep an eye on it. I drank plently of fluids, but his fluid always seemed to be a little low. He was also always measuring a bit smaller than A and B. It was never critically low, so the docs just kept watching it. But when I delivered at 33 1/2 weeks, the docs. were surprised to find that C weighed only 2lbs. 13oz, compared to 4lbs.6oz,and 5lbs. They determined he suffered from IUGR, (Interuterine Growth Restriction), which is when A and B take from him. But he ended up doing great! Usually babies with IUGR do better than their siblings because they are stressed in the womb (if this is even the case you are experiencing). He is now a spunky 9 month old beating up his brothers. I wish you luck and will be praying for your baby.

I was there too! And your dr gave sound advice! Just follow that and hopefully everything will work out fine When your dw lays on her left side it helps the blood flow and oxygen get to the babies with less work, because her heart is basically on the left side making it work less. Drinking fluids is key to getting the babies fluids up, the more she drinks the more fluids they will have in their sacs, and she will help keep contractions at bay also. This is the way it was explained to me by my drs when I was in the same situation. Good luck, Kim

I did not experience low fluids, but read over & over that when low fluid is a concern, the mother should drink drink drink to help replenish the fluid.
I'd like to comment on the 1cm cervix. This is EXTREMELY short. If this had been the case a few weeks ago she could have had a cerclage placed to keep it from shortening any further. Since the time for a cerclage has passed, I don't think I can emphasize enough that your wife should keep herself on the strictest possible bedrest at home. She must not drive herself to any appointments (in case she's still doing that), and she must not walk from the parking lot to the doctor, either. She needs to be wheeled in a wheelchair from the car to her doctor's office - PLEASE make sure this happens for her! A cervix that short can "go" just like that, and the babies will be born on an emergency basis. She should limit her showers at home to just one or two a week, and if you can arrange things so that she has food & drink at her bedside, then there's even less for her to get up for. Please do everything in your power to make her life so that she doesn't have to get up for anything other than to use the potty, okay?
I have heard very good results from drinking the fluids & resting. Let's assume the same good fortune is in store for your little family, too!

Hello everyone - thanks so much for your quick response. It brought us major relief that others have experineced this with great results.
Tulip - I'll definately keep my DW off her feet except for potty breaks although she goes a lot because she's drinking so much water. She also seems to not be able to quench her thirst even though she drinks a lot of water.
Thanks again to all for keeping us in your prayers as we will also keep you in ours.
Peace and God bless, Mike
