#110, "How do you get them to sleep through the night?"
|
The triplets mother wants to get them to sleep through the night. They were born 9/14/2003 at 4lbs, 4.1lbs and 2.8lbs. They are now just under 12 pounds and right at 9 pounds as of 12/17. She has a singleton, now 5 y/o who she was able to get to sleep through the night at 13lbs. (Farber or Ferber's suggestion?) The first night, he cried for an hour and a half with the parents going in every 5 minutes to pat him on the back and offer soothing words. The second night he only cried a half hour and the third it was just 5 - 10 minutes. Since then he has slept through the night. This is foreign to me since I had a family bed and they (twins) always slept throughout the night awakening to nurse only. She is hesitant to follow the same instructions because they are triplets. Of course, I want this to continue until their 30, since I lose my job when they sleep through the night! In addition, it would kill me to listen to them crying for so long. I pick them up after a few seconds when they don't settle. Quite often they need more burping.
Any suggestions would be welcome. (They were born @ 32 1/2 weeks, bottle fed with breast milk and formula until a few weeks ago.) Also, they are up to about 190 cc's of formula. The little one, about 150 cc.

MIne started sleeping through the night at 6 mths. Dr did not advise sleeping throught the night without a feeding until they weighed 12 lbs. Sounds like she is doing the babywise sleep training. Lots of parents on this board have used it. We rocked our babies until they were 15 mths and too heavy to tock, then started putting them to bed awake. It took abaout a month for them to get the hang of it. In my opinion the 9 lber needs a night bottle to make it through...

Thanks so much for the information. We will definitely check out Baby Wise. Also, thanks for the compliment. I really enjoy it. Mom's going to keep me around for a while even after they get through the night I found out to my surprise. Lucky for me!

hi night nanny- mine were 09/02 babies and i wanted them to be sleeping throught the night by christmas too but it did not happen. it took until about feb. one suggestion- i did a dream feed with mine at about 1030 or 11 pm. that seemed to help them sleep through better. i did read babywise and the baby whisperer - i tried to be a good babywise mom and was mostly successful but not quite as militant as the book suggests which is why i liked the baby whisperer book better. same idea but a gentler approach. i think the premie status of the babies should change your expectations of whent hey should start sleeping through the night. mine were 36 week babies. and most of babywise only addresses full term singletons. i think mine finally started sleeping through when i was too exhausted to getup at night. hummm. good luck terri
