#1107, "abdominal pressure"

HI

I am 18w4d and have been developing a lower abdominal pressure sensation over the last few days. It is not painful and feels like a tightness. I did not know if this was a pulling sensation from getting bigger or perphaps something more serious. I did see my Dr on Monday and everything looked ok with the babies on ultrasound. I mentioned it briefly but was not to concerned because it was infequent and would not persist, however, last night it seemed a bit longer in duration. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lynette

Hi Lynette and CONGRATULATION I think you should CALL YOUR DR. RIGHT AWAY! If you have any questions, or think something just may not be right- DO NOT hesitate to call them, it is their job!!!! Also, I just wanted to add to trust your instincts! If they tell you "oh you don't need to come in" but you feel that something is just not right- tell them you're coming anyway. In my case, my Dr. told me i could wait a few days on something. I was leaving her office and just felt I couldn't wait. I waited for her to finish up the next patient and told her how I felt. It is a long story, but in the end- I was right and b/c I went with my instincts my babies are here today. Not trying to scare you at all- but just don't hesitate to call them! The worst they can do is send you home! Good luck to yo

Please do call your dr. I finally called mine after a full day of debating the issue (it was a Sunday and I had an appointment Monday morning) because of feeling pressure, no tightening or contractions. My OB sent me to Labor & Delivery where it was discovered I was most definitely contracting. After 2 IVs and 2 rounds of tocolytics I was discharged with stricter home bedrest. At the time my dr. told me that I was the best judge of something "not being right" and he wouldn't be in OB if he didn't want to be disturbed after hours.

Lynette,

Congratulations on your pg.

I would advise you to call your doctor asap. What you are feeling could be nothing, but it could be PTL. The first time I was hooked up to a monitor, I was feeling what you are feeling and I was shocked to see how many contractions I was having that I didn't even feel!

Better to play it on the safe side.

Best of luck!

In case you need one more person saying the same thing...

call your doctor. I don't feel much when I have contractions with my triplet pregnancy so you never know and it's better to be safe.

Lynette,

I'll weigh in here to say Call Your Doctor NOW! See if you can be set up on Home-Contraction monitoring if they don't want to admit you to L&D? I was on home bedrest (this started at 14 weeks) and only 'cause of monitoring did we discover I was having pre-term contractions/labor...I didn't feel a thing! Only later when I was on bedrest in hospital, was I able to identify that "pulling" sensation as pre-term labor! Call NOW if you haven't already...and drink lots of water!

I do not want to scare you unnecessarily, but incompetent cervix, if you can feel anything at all, feels like a vague pressure. Nothing painful, just a slight ache maybe, or tension. No cramps, nothing that you can't pass off in your mind as just "getting bigger". Many women don't feel anything at all.

I know whereof I speak. The symptoms I've described are what I felt as, unbeknownst to me, my cervix was funneling internally & shortening. Thank goodness I had a doctor's appointment already scheduled, because I was telling myself it was nothing and was just from me getting bigger. To my shock my cervix had gone from over 4 cm to 1.5 cm in a week or so. I truly would have miscarried if this was not discovered via an internal/transvaginal ultrasound. I was able to have an emergency cerclage the next morning, and my babies were saved.

Lynette, you should call your doctor and request that you get an internal ultrasound check of your cervix. A visual or manual check will not tell you if something is hapening internally, such as in my case. IC is one of the leading cause of miscarriage in the 2nd trimester, and sadly there have been several women here at TC who have experienced it and lost their babies.

I agree with Tulip. My cervix began funneling/shortening at 26 weeks. I had a regular visit with my peri who did a internal ultrasound and admitted me to the hospital right away. I spent the next 6 weeks on strict hospital bedrest (they wouldn't even let me get up to go to the bathroom). I had no symptoms at all, but was already 2 cm dilated as well. Please do not hesitate to call your doctor and demand to be checked out. I frequently look at my boys and thank god I had such a proactive peri; they are here and healthy because of his quick actions.
