Terry,

Adjusted only applies to babies born prematurely. For instance, mine were born 3 months early so that when the came home they were -4 weeks. At their "3 month appointment" they were at 0 adjusted, at 6 months from birth they were "3 months adjusted". It's a method to ensure they make development milestones appropriate for when they were born.

The term adjusted age is sometimes used by OTs and PTs until 5 yrs of age. Depending on the severity of prematurity and consequences of it. Time spent intubated is often 'not counted' as time included in age for developmental purposes. So a baby born at 26 wks, who was intubated for 2 wks would be an adjusted age of 2 wks, four weeks after their 40 wk due date. It is often used to 'give babies a break' who have had a rough start, when considering where their development should ideally be. My son was considered by some to have been six months behind his chronological age, because of the severity of his medical problems.

Our boys were born at 28.5 weeks, so we had to fool around with "adjusted age" for a while. The adjusted age is how old they would be if they were actualy born on their due-date. Our ped stopped using adjusted age when the boys met the average weight/heigth for their real age...it no longer was an issue. Can't remember exactly what check-up that was...probably the 18 month, give or take 6 months.

By 18 months or so, kids' rate of mental and physical development is so varied that a few months adjusted age in no longer very significant.
