#1465, "Eye patching for 6th nerve palsy"
|
my son just saw another opthamologist (he is 17 mo old) for a second opinion on this congenital problem. the last dr. said there was nothing that can be done. this one we saw on tuesday said he recommended patching the good eye for a few hours a day to keep the brain actively engaging his bad eye so his vision doesn't deteriorate in that eye. i just wondered if anyone had done this for this specific problem and if you felt it was beneficial. thanks, Meg

I'm sorry that I don't have any specific 6th nerve palsy info. My son has congenital 4th nerve palsy. His situation wasn't diagnosed until age 5 and glasses have had an amazing impact on his condition.
Patching wasn't an option for my son's condition. However, some people who have used patching have recommended specific eye patches. Perhaps some "vision discussion boards" or moms here at TC can suggest brands that are easier on the skin.
Best wishes,
Sharon 6 year old b/b/b + 10 year old son

Meg, Definitely try the patching. It is not a guarantee but in many cases it does work. Your son's vision would have to be monitored from time to time with the patching. Did the doctor give you specific directions regarding the frequency of patching? Let me know if you have any questions. Dawn

Dawn, thanks for your response. you should send me a bill for all you have advised me. just kidding! anyway, the optho suggested 2 hours a day of patching his 'good' eye. it doesn't seem like a lot of time to me, but i guess it may be enough. we have been doing it and jones tolerates it just fine. we will go back in 6 weeks and at that appt we will see the pediatric optho. thanks!
Meg

It sounds like you are on the right track! Let me know how you make out after the 6 week follow up.
