I had a cerclage six weeks ago and have had no problems since. I am not on bedrest and have not been told not to have sex. My Dh and I both have been concerned that it could cause problems. I am curently 21 weeks pregnant, have had no braxton hicks contractions no spotting nothing. And no sex for quite some time. It is driving me crazy. I was wondering if any of you know if it is okay or not?

Hi there! I had a cerclage at 13 weeks and I was told NO SEX!!! Two reasons: One when they put the stitch in and tie off the end they leave some of the thread(which is like fishing line almost like wire)hanging down so they can find it easily to remove and I don't think your DH would enjoy getting poked by wire too much and Two having sex can cause uterine contractions especially if you have an orgasim. I'm sure this is not what you wanted to hear and it sucks, but you do what you have to do to have healthy babies. I had my stitch put in in July and had my 3 in Oct. at 29weeks. They are home now and are very healthy. It was a long time for my DH and I not to have sex, but remember all of this is temporary. Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no that is not what I wanted to here but it was what I expected to here. My poor dh. he will survive though I want to do what is best for the babies.

I think Jenni's answer is right, but the **BEST POSSIBLE** person to ask would be your ob/peri. Even a nurse would be able to tell you!

Also, the cerclage suture & the resulting "holes" in your cervix leave you wide-open for an infection from anything that gets that far up your vagina, such as what would make it up there due to sexual activity (no matter what it is that makes it up there, KWIM?).

Not worth it.

There are ways for your hubby to have fun that don't involve your body below the waist.

I am a Velveteen Rabbit, and the birth, love, kisses & magic that are my children has made me Real.

We were told no sex after I concieved the trips. Chemicals in the orgasm could start interuterine contractions. So in reality we are looking at no sex or orgasms for about 10 months. I guess I could join the convent but, My husband keeps reminding me it is for the babies. Try to keep that the focus and know that I am suffering with you! It will be worth it!

our very well respected peri from Boston put it this way:

is the two minutes (!) of pleasure worth the anguish and concern if you started to have bleeding, PT labor etc.? also any good OB will tell you that semen has pitocin (sp?) which is what is used to induce labor...

DW and I will suffer through the drought and know we have done the best for our babies (and look forward to that "two minutes" after they are born!);)

I have a friend who has had cerclages done on two of her pregnancies due to an incompetent cervix and she was told absolutely no sex. I didn't have a cerclage, but was told no sex after 16 weeks. Better to be safe than sorry.

i was told, in no uncertain terms, NOT to have any sort of sexual intercourse after my cerclage!

it was well worth it...
call you doc first thing monday to be sure.
