#1634, "CIO - Is it ok to check their diaper?"
|
We just started the CIO thing the past couple of days and it's getting better. My little one, Daniela, sleeps through the night without waking up but my daugther Vanessa wakes up every two hours or so crying with her eyes still closed, which causes my son to wake up sometimes and he cries but he falls right back asleep. Now my question is....Do I check to see if her diaper is wet in the middle of the night? When I got her out of bed this morning at 7am, I changed her diaper and it was saturated. Could this be the reason she was crying all night?

Cristina, some babies can be sensitive to wet diapers but (I'm assuming you're using disposable) the diapers today are SUPER absorbant. What you might consider doing is putting her in a size larger for nighttime.
I would only change a crying baby's diaper (during the night) if they pooped. I would not change for a wet diaper.
Good Luck.

Checking diapers is more than acceptable, it is "mothering". Patting the child on the back at increasingly longer intervals, just to reassure him/her is also acceptable (according to the book I read). You are simply not supposed to speak to them or pick them up. My husband just asked, "you're not supposed to speak to them while you are changing their diaper???". I guess I should clarify by saying you aren't supposed to speak when you go in to check on a child that is CIO.
Okay, I've got to go "mother" my own kids that are at the breakfast table!

cristina, it could be the reason, and to be on the safe side i would recommend the huggies nighttime diapers, maybe even a size up from what your kiddos are wearing. my son fills his diapers to the absolute maximum, but these diapers at least don't let a lot of the moisture out in the night. he wakes up with a heavy diaper, but at least his clothes and body aren't wet. its worth a try.

Meg,
Right now we are using Huggies Ultratrim one size up. Are they actually called Huggies Nighttime diapers?

cristina, yes, they are called Huggies "overnights" and i believe the smallest size they come in are size 3. my kids wore these on an 8 hour car ride and not one of them had wet clothes (and they drank a TON!) so all that extra absorbant padding works! i use one on just one of my boys at night. it would at least eliminate that worry for you during the night.

I doubt it but some kids can be really sensetive to wet diapers. When we did and do CIO we give them there time frame and then peak in to make sure they are not stuck or anything like that and if they look fine we leave them and walk out. Mine are pretty regular in the BM dept. so I feel pretty safe about it not being a poopy diaper that has woken them. I would say do what YOU are comfortable with. That will always make you and DH happiest even if it is a little sleep deprived. By the way we read and used BabyWise and for us it worked like a charm.
