#2056, "Going to one nap"

How do you know that it's time for one nap a day? How can you tell the difference between a phase or Nap Rebellion versus the babies no longer needing two down-times a day? What if not all babies are ready for one nap?

Is it logical to assume that when you go to one nap a day that there will be some exceptional days when you will be doing two naps (for whatever reason)?

Hi Tulip! Well, I can give you my opinion on this subject, but remember, this is coming from a "Babywise" mom (firm believer and follower of the babywise philosophy). In the book, it says babies can be cut from their morning nap, down to one nap a day between 18 and 24 months. I see your babies are 12 months. I would probably try to hold them off from cutting it out for another couple months if possible, but if not, you can always try. I would let them try to cut out a nap, and if by one hour pass the time they go down they are doing good (not cranky, rubbing eyes, etc.)I would let them try it again! If not, I would say they're not ready to cut it out yet. As far as one being ready and the other two not, well, I have always found it easier to keep all three on the same schedule. I know it's hard at times, but they'll adjust. It's just easier for me that way. Happy mom = happy babies! I hope this helps.........coming from a mom who hasn't been through this stage yet!

I say majority rules. I had two kids ready so the thrid went along for the ride. Somedays my third would sleep longer b/c she need more rest but after time she got into the swing of things. There were times when they turned into cranky monsters and I had to put them down for two naps and then a day later they were back to one nap. I choose for them to drop their afternoon nap. They go down between 11 and 12 pm and then up a few hours later. Dinner is at 5:30 pm and then up to bed by 6:30 pm lights out by 7 pm.

Personally, we just transitioned to one nap (started at 15.5 months). It was easier than I thought. I was sure my boys weren't ready, but they proved me wrong. Their 2 naps were getting progressively shorter (going from 2-2.5 hours to 1 hour), and then the stopped taking afternoon naps. They did this for about 4 days, so I decided to try one nap. I waited until the weekend when dh would be home to provide extra help. There are still some days when we do 2 naps. Mondays are usually 2 nap days, as they are off schedule on Sundays when we visit with my family (they don't nap as well there, and are extra tired on Mondays). Today we ran errands, so they slept 20 min in the car to the shopping center, and that made a HUGE difference. But, most days, we are on a one nap schedule. They sleep anywhere from 2-3 hours, but they stay in their crib for 3 hours to allow me to clean up and have some "me" time. They do often get crabby around 10-10:30 (they usually wake around 7 am, and nap is at noon), so we have some reading time, a little snack, or watch thier "Signing Time" video to settle down. Then, they are fine.

If my guys hadn't done too well with 1 nap after 1.5-2 weeks, I would have gone back, but they do fine, and I LOVE a 3 hour block instead of 2 one-hour blocks.

I also have one that has a harder time making it. He just gets extra cuddles, and sometimes his binky if he is really fussy. If it is horrible, I'll put him down for 20-30 min and wake him up so that he'll be on at least somewhat of the same schedule.

Good luck!

Bump! I was going to post this same thing. My trio will take their 10:00 nap but wake after 20-40 min (it used to be 1.5-2 hrs) and then fight the afternoon nap. I was going to try to do one nap after lunch but thought it was too early. Can't wait to see the replies.

Hi Tulip, my trio went to one nap a day at 11 months. They were starting to wake early from their naps and fighting the afternoon nap (which was the one i really needed). Now they take one nice, long 3 hour nap from 12pm-3pm. Ahhhh, life is good !!! My kiddos do get cranky at around 10:45ish so i get on down to the floor w/ them and read books, wrestle, etc... to keep them busy until lunch time at 11:30.

Oh, as far as one still needing a morning nap, my Karli once in a while is extra cranky in the am so i let her nap for 15-20 min. Just long enough to take the edge off. HTH

My babies went to one nap at around 16 months and needed to go to 3 meals/2 snacks at about the same time. At first I couldn't figure it out--they were so tired and cranky but just flat out refused to go to sleep no matter what--but then eventually it all became clear--my little one lagged behind and continued two naps for a couple of weeks. It took awhile to adjust but they finally did. It was tough too, I thought I was going to lose a few times but we've worked it out and now we're trying to get them to sleep through the night (20 months old now)--if you any advice let us know.

Mine usually wake at around 5-630 (Olivia waking first), all nap between 10-1130. They sometimes will nap in the afternoon but not on a regular basis. Then they go to bed at around 630. If anyone, Stephen will nap in the afternoon but it is no problem to get him to go to sleep at night (he just loves his sleep). There have been days that they all will take a quick nap in the afternoon, like 30 minutes.
