#2262, "Help! Night soaker - suggestions?"

Hi all! I'm not sure why I didn't post this question sooner as you all have such wonderful advice. I have had this dilema for some time now. One of my boys (my smallest in fact) soaks through his diaper at least a couple times each week. We nickname him "the urinater". I have tried night time diapers, but huggies is the only one I could find in a size 3, and he soaks right through them (through his onesie and all). This may sound silly, but I was debating putting a maxi pad in his diaper at night for extra! Any better suggestions? Have you seen diaper inserts for night? Thanks!

Karen , I had this problem with both my boys! And one of my triplet mom friends suggested I use the next size up diaper! (she did it with her 3 boys also) Well it worked! So if he is in 3 buy some 4s and try them at night , it will probably be more comfortable than having to double up or even the maxi idea.

Have you thought of putting on rubber pants over his diaper, even a disposable one. It might help contain the leakage.

Have you tried Luvs? Just the regular Luvs. They are guaranteed not to leak, and do really well for a nighttime diaper. I'd also suggest going up a size for nighttime.

Karen, I am going to apologize in advance for adding yet another worry to your list. You mentioned that you have been dealing with this for some time now, but if you wouldn't mind my asking, do you mean that this is something that started recently or has your son done this for several months? The reason I ask, and I certainly do not mean to be an alarmist, is that we dealt with a similar situation with my youngest who turned out to have diabetes. For about two weeks, he was soaking through his diapers and we were finally just putting two on him to make it through the night. Luckily enough for us, I just "knew" something was wrong and took him in to see the ped. I had no idea about the signs/symptoms of diabetes and all my kids were super-healthy--especially this full term child that I had breast fed exclusively for almost 18 months. He was diagnosed two weeks before his second birthday. While I certainly would not wish this disease on anyone else, I do feel obligated to point out the signs to other parents. Frequent urination just sends up a red flag to me. I sincerely hope your problem is just poorly made diapers and that you can just use one of the other suggestions listed here and never have to think about my response again. Aside from the frequent urination, other obvious symptoms are extreme thirst, very sweet smelling breath, and weight loss. Any child of any age can get type 1 diabetes. You do not have to have a family history of it (we certainly did not). If your son is experiencing any other symptoms, call your ped for a quick check just to be on the safe side. They can do a urine test easily and painlessly just to rule it out. Again, I apologize for having to think the worst, but I would rather have the information and never need it than have to wish that someone had told me. I sure hope you feel the same. Good luck to you!

No need to apologize. Thank you for the info. I will call the ped tomorrow. He doesn't seem to be excessively thirsty, and he gains weight well (normally), but we do notice he has "stinkyish" breath - kind of smells like formula? Funny you say that about the urine test. A couple weeks ago for their nine month check ups the nurse tried to get a sample of urine from each boy, but had no luck. I'm not sure if that would have tested for it. Thanks!

One more thing Traci, this has been happening for a while. Ever since he was a preemie, he soaked through the preemie diapers. It's not poor diaper, he has just always produced more urine than his brothers, and he's our smallest!

Karen, if it has been going on that long, you are definitely not dealing with diabetes. It is just not something that can go on and on for months...you would have noticed other "problems". Also, the breath is a very sweet fruity smell, not stinky at all. I can remember laying with my son while he was sleeping and thinking how precious he was and how good his breath smelled...if I had only known!

Thank you for being so kind...I hated to "cry wolf", but there was another little boy who came into the hospital while we were there, and he was not expected to make it because he had gone undiagnosed for so long. He was only 18 months old. Around our house, if anyone pees once or twice more than they usually do, I use Liam's meter to check their sugar level...I am just a little paranoid, I guess.
