#2330, "giving meds"

OK guys, HOW do you give liquid medicine to a child that spits it back at you? I have tried the horse trick (like horse wormer) - stick the dropper in the cheek to the back of the mouth and squirt, but he still works it out with his tongue. All this while holding down arms and legs and squaring the head too. I have tried to reason with him, and tell him the medicine will make his owies go away, but I just don't know how far that really goes with a two year old. I try to do it as fast as possible, but I don't even know how much he's really getting - supposed to be 4 ml, and this morning I gave an extra 2 ml for the amount lost due to spitting. This is only the second time we have dosed him, but it keeps getting worse, not better, plus he runs and screams when he sees the medicine. I have tried hiding it, but he can just tell I am "stalking" him. At least we have about twice as much medicine as we need, because the pharmacist couldn't mix it any other way.
Question number 2: This medicine is for an itchy bacterial infection in his skin. Any ideas on how to keep him from itching it? This started as bug bites, but he has been itching it for so long it has become infected, and he is now digging and itching, instead of passively scratching, if that makes sense. He has some sensory issues - nothing slimy, sticky, etc, so I am thinking band-aids aren't going to work that well. The worst sores are on his upper arms (reaches through the top of the shirt), and his belly by his hip. Also one on the back of his head. Any ideas on the interim until the meds take effect in a day or two? I can tell it is really starting to bug him because he is really clingy right now, and starts to scratch, and then wines and stops. I just know he is miserable, and I really want to help him out!
Thanks for any and all ideas you have!

#1 - Bribe him to take the meds? Not everyone's idea of good parenting, I'm sure, but it beats him NOT taking his meds, right?
#2 - Cover what areas you can with Ace bandages???

My 22 month old triplet also refuses his meds (antibiotic for ear infection). I have put the teaspoon in some yogurt, just a small enough amont to hide the taste and color, he goes for it every time. Debbie, Proud Mom to three miracles 34 weeks 1 day (we are 22 months)!

The only suggestion I can give you on the medicine is to try it in juice, milk, etc. I would even try something like chocolate milk so it seems like a treat. It is so important to correctly dose an antibiotic. As for the itching, will he keep gloves on? I know a friend used gloves to keep her son from scratching (tho' it was a behavioral problem not a medical one) Good luck

hi.
i'm guessing you've tried this before, and if you haven't, i have no idea whether it would work for an older child, but we squirt about half as far back as possible without gagging and then quickly and gently blow right in their face...it makes them reflexively swallow (my mil taught me this trick---she learned it from her vet for her dog!). then, of course, you have to do it AGAIN with the second half!
what about putting the meds in food (liquid meds in juice, applesauce, strawberry flavored milk, on pbj sandwich, etc)?
good luck.

The only thing that I can think of other than blowing in the face, is to squirt it in their mouth, while holding their nose. They have to swallow the liquids in order to breath. While it might sound harsh, it gets the meds in them. I had to do this with my dd who had seizures when she was younger.
I laid her on the floor, and strattled myself over the top of her holding her arms down between my legs. I used one of my hands to hold her nose, and the other to squirt the meds in. Good luck!

How old is the child your giving it to? We use syringes instead of droppers--they work much better because you can give it in small increments plus it's easier to draw up the exact amount--any pharmacy will sell syringes with no needle OTC.
When my babies were tiny I would put a nipple in a ring, put the medicine in the nipple and let them suck it out. Now that they're older (20 months) I have two that are little drug addicts, they will suck on the syringe like it's candy. But my little one I have to chase down--finally, realizing how much he likes to drink out of my glass when I have something to drink, I put his medicine in a glass and hold it for him while he drinks it--sometimes I have to follow him around the room or push a little but he gets it down. Depending on how thick the medicine is I put a little extra in to make up for what is left in the glass. Good Luck.

I have three yr old triplets and as you know creativity is the way. We got Nicole to take her Amoxacillin by sneaking it in some juice and telling her that if she drank the juice all gone then she would not have to take the medicine. Lying is not my forte', however this worked like a charm:) Good Luck, Melissa

Our two year old hates medicine, too, but takes it just fine in juice. Just make sure that if you are using a sippy cup that it is one that he can drain--some of them he can't get quite all the juice out, so that leaves some medicine too kwim?

answer for for one o fyour questions. Purchase Ora Sweet from the pharmacy it is a sweetner. I measure out the girls meds then add a 1:1 ratio of Ora Sweet and down the hatch it goes.
