It's weird that you posted this because dh and I have had VERY preliminary talks about this very thing. (I'm on board with the idea about 80%, he's up to about 5% now. )Our original IVF was a 3 embryo transfer, and all 3 took. Obviously implantation was not my problem!
If I do go back to use my 5 frozen embryos I will not transfer more than one at a time. Sorry, I love my kids dearly, but I can not chance it happening again. I checked and made sure my RE froze my embryos in individual vials so we can thaw out one at a time until one survives, then transfer that one. My doctor saw no problem doing it this way - it just might take me a couple extra months to get pregnant, assuming any survive the thaw process, and assuming they are viable enough to implant.
If mine were frozen 2 or 3 together, I seriously doubt if I would attempt another pg with them. I am terrified of using more than one, but that's just me! As it is, I could still end up with identicals if the one little guy splits, but I can't exactly prevent that! When we know for sure we are done having children, any embryos we have remaining would be placed for adoption, which (for us) is the only acceptable alternative to using them ourselves.
As for you age, I don't know how much that plays a role now since your embryos are still from a woman the age you were when they were fertilized. I can get pregnant at age 40 and my baby would still be that of a 29 year old, so no added risk of genetic disorders, etc. Maybe carrying a pregnancy successfully is affected by being older, but not the health of the embryo. Does that make sense?
As for FET outcomes in general, one mom (that I know of) in my local group had a singleton from a fresh cycle, and then triplets a couple years later from a FET!

Very good topic. I can not wait to hear the results. Matter of fact I think I may post a poll.I am currently in the being stages of being a GS(gestational surrogate). At the begining we both agreed to transfer only 2. But, as the IPs(intended parents) have been doing research on the transfer of FROZEN embryos and the success rate, they think they may want to transfer 3. Like most people, I am not sure I want to do the triplet pregnancy again. So hfar the posts here are positive ones!

My triplets are the result of FET. I had 7 embryos frozen using 1993 technology so they thawed all of them. 4 embryos survived the thaw so they transferred all 4 and 3 took. My original transfer was with 4 and 1 took (a son, now deceased - my oldest daughter was spontaneous). Good luck to you.

Hi,
This is a very good topic and so timely for me as DH and I are thinking of trying again with FET.
We currently do not have any living children. Since losing our triplet babies to PROM/PTL, we are very leary about having another multiple pg, so we have talked with the RE about how to avoid this.
What I learned is that the quality of the embryos, when thawed, truely depends on the quality of the lab and the skill of the embryologist. The CDC has recently posted the current (2001) IF Clinic success ratings on their site, so you can check out your clinic's success rate. Be advised that a mutliple pg/live birth outcome is only counted as ONE pg/live birth, although I think they do print the % of twins, trips, quads+ for IVF in general. Also, you really can't compare clinics because some clinics deal more with male factor, endometriosis, etc. But you can see the stats on yoru clinic, how many IVFs they did, how many FET, the success rate in pg for FET and for live births in FET.
As someone else already mentioned, how your embryos were frozen could play a big role in how many you transfer. Ours are frozen individually, therefore they can be thawed one at a time and transfered one at a time. If the one that is thawed gets damaged during the thaw, it only takes about 30-45 minutes to thaw another one.
As for success, I think this varies. I know people who have only gotten pg with FET. I also know people who have never gotten pg with FET.
I hope some of this info helps?!? Best of luck!

CDC-Center for Disease Control. The website for IF Clinci stats is http://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/art.htm
The header will read: Assistive Reproductive Technology success rates....to the right of that will be a color-coded map of the US. Click on that to find find your state and clinic.
FYI-it's a little confusing at first to understand what the heck that statistics are mark ing, but once you figure it out, it's interesting.
happy searching

We did IVF and with our fresh transfer of three very good quality we got one baby. With our frozen transfer of three not so good quality we had four babies. When I talked to the RE about this he said in looking at the eggs they really did not think any of them would work, tells you how much they know. LOL. We have three more frozen and not sure what to do with those. Keep us updated on how it goes. :>

I was blessed with our trips on the very first attempt, with fresh embryos. My specialist only wanted to emplant 2 , but dh and I insisted on 3 to make our chances better! They made it sound so dismal that our % to get pg was so low , we didnt feel we had a choice! But so much for their % rates, all three took! That was in 2000, we have been in dilema ever since , because we have the 2 frozen embryos left! And I like so many others love my babies more than anything! No buts about it, I dont want to have multiples again! I do think it would be a wonderful experience to have a singleton and our 30mth olds love babies! A new baby would be a welcomed addition to our family! Ive been thinking about them everyday since the initial transplant! Like you our clinic is 1200 miles away. And in our case the transfer will be totally free, because 2 transfers were included in the original costs! So all I have to pay for is the meds! And we would time it so we could travel there for the transfer and then visit family and freinds for a week or two! But I think my dilema now is when to do it, Im 32 now and would like to do it before Im 35, just my prefrence. And I know that the chances of the embryos surviving the thaw is low, but atleast I would feel I gave them a chance even if they didnt make it. Plus the fear of multiples is always in the back of my mind! So Im very interested to see what everyone else has to say on this subject! Thanks for the great topic! Kim

I'm currently 14w pg with triplets via DFET. We thawed 8, 7 survived and we transferred 4 (two eight cell and two 10 cell). The other 3 we let go to see if they would make it to blast so we could refreeze, but they didn't and were discarded. Of the 4 that we tf'd 2 implanted and 1 split. At first we only thought we had twins as my RE only saw 2 sacs at my 5.5w u/s and 2 sacs and 2 heartbeats at a 6.5w u/s; then released me to my OB and Peri. At my first u/s with OB at 8w he found a third heartbeat...just let me say it was a good thing I was laying down!
Although I have no way of knowing which embryos implanted and which one split, if I were to do this again and end up with the same to tf, I would probably only tf the two 10 cell. I don't believe 2 is unreasonable. This of course is no guarantee that I wouldn't end up with triplets again, but the odds of one splitting are 1 in 250 according to the stats I found. Even under the most controlled circumstances, mother nature still does what she wants and we have no control over that.

We have done 3 FETs. On the first we transferred 3 embryos and ended up with one taking and our daughter Hannah was born. The second FET we transferred 2 and nothing took. Our 3rd FET we transferred 3 and we ended up with Nick, Olivia, and Emilee. Something to keep in mind is that as you get older, the chances for multiples goes up. I have also heard that once you've been pg it's easier to get pg because your body knows what it is doing...not sure if that is medically accurate, but something to think about anyway.

One more comment...
The chance of embryos splitting after a 3 day transfer is 1 in 250. If you wait until a 5 day blast transfer, that number changes drastically to 1 in 20, so you might want to bring this up to your RE, too.
