#2506, "Boys Vs. Girls motor skills"

Hi,I'm new to this forum and have a question. I have 10 mo old GBG triplets born at 34w5d 3/17/03. My son has been crawling since before Thanksgiving and my girls are still rolling around and moving backward (we have no developmental delays). I've heard boys have better gross motor skills than girls, but it seems like they will never crawl. Anyone else with BG combo's experience this.

My niece never crawled; she just scooted on her "tushie" then up and walked!

Within my trio, my DD met all of her gross motor milestones before her brother's. My guess is that there are differences based on the individual characteristics of the child and not the gender.

i agree with lisa, it is so much dependent on the individual child. but in response to your question, i have 2 boys and a girl. my girl sat up first, but i think it was one of my boys that actually crawled first. my girl just wanted to stand up at 10 mo. but the boys did things more traditionally. at 12 months they were just starting to pull up and barely getting the crawling thing down. one of my boys was a pretty late crawler but i think more than anything it was his body type. he is pretty thick all around and i think getting that body and head to move was too much work!
its fun to see how differently they develop and how they figure things out on their own timetables!

Meg

No, actually my experience is the exact opposite. My son didn't start 'normal' crawling until almost 11 months (prior to that he could FLY across the room on his back! ROFL!), whereas my girls were crawling at 6 or 7. Same with sitting up, girls started at 6 months, he started at 10. My started taking steps at 10.5 months & 11 months, he didn't until 14.

Funny how they are all different!

Though I only have a singleton girl now, since you said they have no developmental delays, our situation should apply. My girl crawled at 13 months and walked just shy of 20 months. She's totally perfect and now at 26 months runs like the wind! I'm sure your girls will catch up in no time, but enjoy the time where the girls move a bit more slowly than you boy. Everyone said I was lucky my little girl walked so late, and though I worried a bit, they were right! When she started walking she never fell or bumped into anything.

Hi , I have bbg , they are 30 mths now. But when they were learning to crawl the boys got it first! they would get around so good crawling and she would roll wherever she wanted to go , it was cute and comical at times! The boys did all the physical stuff first, crawling , sitting, standing, walking, ect... She wasnt far behind them though! And when it came to learning to talk first she was number one! She was the first to want to learn the potty too. They never needed any sort of therapies and they have thrived even though at times one takes a little longer to learn things than the other ones, after all they are each indiviuals and will certainly keep letting us know that! Give them time they will all crawl and soon enough in three different directions!

tammy- mine are the opposite. my boys were about one to two months behind my daughter in the walking and crawling and running department. they are catching up now. it just depends on the kids i think. as long as they are within normal limits don't worry. oh but this is funny- my mom who is a special ed teacher insisted taht my boys learn to crawl in the conventional manner on hands and knees because there ave ben studies showing a coorelation between the lateral movement of crawling and reading ability. who thinks of these studies and why? terri

Hey! Our babies have the same bday!!! Mine were born at 33w5d.

My first-born, Jonah has been crawling since mid December, is now pulling up, just this week.

My middle boy, Justin has been commando crawling for about 2weeks.

Erin has always rolled everywhere, she gets exactly where she wants to be. She is this week up on her hands and knees rocking and trying to move forward. She has always been the most incredibly laid back and content baby, so this fits her personality. She is more verbal tho, saying Da-Da first.

With my twins, Noah hit all the physical milestones first too. His personality is exactly like Jonah.

Even tho my boys have hit the milestones first, I think it still is the baby's temperment that drives them.

I have 17 mo bbg. Gabrielle started Army crawling the week she turned 6 months & NEVER crawled the right way but she could move with lightning speed. The boys started about 2 weeks after her but crawled the normal way. They all were standing around 9 months and Aidan walked at 10 months. Gabbi & Nolan walked at 11 months. HTH.
