Hi Eman, I am almost 24 weeks pg w/ triplets & I haven't heard of fused placentas so I'm not much help. Did your doc say everything was ok? Please let us know if you find out anymore information.
Again, I'm sorry I don't have anything useful for you-maybe I shouldn't have replied. : )
Wishing you the best! Jenni:-)

I have heard of fused placentas; sometimes they think twins have one placenta when it is just two fused together. I'm not sure what the implications of this are. Perhaps you could call the OB's office and ask the nurse?

Hi Eman,
Two of my boys had a "shared" or fused placenta. They called it shared at first, but it was a big so they figured they had fused and it provided really well for them both. My doctor explained to me that the more important thing was that there was a membrane separating each of those boys - as long as the placenta was functioning correctly and the boys were growing, it was fine. If you have concerns, speak up! ask that doctor. I am not usually a very confrontational person, but I had to speak up right then if something was not sitting right with me. Believe me I spent many hours talking with my doc, and when my brain started getting fuzzy because I wasn't sleeping so well and everything started aching - I brought family members who could remember things I had wanted to ask throughout the time. The peri's and other high risk OB's are quite used to us HOM's by now.
About the weight loss, I had a team of high risk OB's who said it was more about calories and nutrition (read: protein) than the mother's actual weight gain. Your body is working so hard right now providing for those babies - your metabolism is through the roof. Don't worry - the weight will come. Right now just drink your water and keep eating. The time is coming where that will be harder to do.
Best of luck and congratulations! Jenni

I had a similar experience to what has already posted. They thought that my two boys were sharing a placenta and didn't know until they were delivered that their placentas were fused. They did very well. Were born at 32 weeks and were both over 4 lbs.
I also struggled to gain weight because I was horribly sick and lost initially. I didn't gain much until about the 5th or 6th month. I was always told that the babies would take what they need and I would be the one to suffer. So, eat what you can to keep up your strength. I ended up gaining fine toward the end.
I agree that you should ask your doctor about concerns.
Anne

Eman- At delivery my OB said that my girls placentas had grown together similiar to what you are experiencing now. I carried to 36weeks and 1 day and delivered via c-section without either of the girls having any difficulty. An AMAZING thing occured also-my OB said he had never seen this before. My son's placenta was rather small, and he said an artery from girls placents, grew to his and helped maintain his throughout the pregnancy!! Without that, his placenta would not have been suffucient to maintain throughout the pregnancy, Every time I think of that I'm amazed at what a miracle occurred! Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well! Drink, drink, drink and stay in bed as much as you can!!! Chris Mom to Molly, Maddie and Gabe 11/29/02
