#309, "Preeclampsia"

I am 32w1d today and yesterday at my peri's appt my blood pressure was 144/99. He sent me to the lab at 8pm on New Year's eve for blood work so I'm assuming he's concerned. I have been having pain right underneath my right breast for about 3 weeks. I figured it was just from my ribs separating or a baby kicking me but I read that this can be a sign of preeclampsia. I have been on blood pressure medicine since 11 weeks so I've been dealing with hypertension through the whole pregnancy. Did anyone else have this pain under their ribs?
I'm not ready to have these babies yet!!!!!! My fetal fibronectin came back negative again so the babies WANT to stay in for 2 more weeks but this body of mine may not let them. HELP!

Hi Michele,
I had to respond because you sound exactly like me. I started b/p pills (procardia) at week 25 when I fell and started having contracions. Anyway as the weeks went on after week 25 my b/p started to slowly creep up until about week 30 or so. I had to do the 24 hour urine test, plus buy a b/p cuff and take my pressure at home, also they gave me the protein urine strip tests for at home. I had to call the peri's immediately if my b/p hit 160/105. Well I made it to exactly week 32, a few days before that I occassionally started seeing silver specks in front of my eyes. Happened while I was driving. On a Tuesday morning the day week 32 started I woke up to my b/p being at the cutoff and protein in my urine. I called the peri's, they told me to go right to the hospital, there they monitored me in what was suppose to be a 23 hour observation. Turns out I saw the spots more, developed a headache, and my b/p was still elevated. It took all day of the doctors trying to establish if I had pre eclampsia or not, but finally right around 7pm they decided this was it, I was delivering that evening. They got the NICU teams toghether, waited for my epidural and b/w results and at 9:06pm baby A was born.

They spent from 3 weeks, 3w4d, and 4w1d in the NICU. Only Matthew has some lung damage and spent time on and off a vent a cpap, he was the biggest and the 1st to come home. By the way I was still driving and still getting around up until the day I delivered. My cervix was great etc, but the day I delivered I was dialated to 5 cm by the time I delivered so it really was time. They did not give me the procardia all day and I think that helped get labor started with the contractions I began having.

If you have any other questions please email me crh29@ptd.net

Hi Michele,

Your doctor is concerned about preeclampsia. I had the same pain in the last 2 weeks before I delivered. The morning of my weekly checkup I woke up with more severe pain. It felt like a bad stomach ache and I had a headache as well. When I got to my appt. my blood pressure was quite elevated and they sent me to the hospital for more testing. The doctor explained that I would probably not be going back home. The tests revealed elevated liver enzymes which explained the right side pain. They immediately scheduled my c-section within the next 2 hrs. I was given medication to prevent seizures that are associated with preeclampsia and toxemia. My girls were all born healthy at 33 weeks and spent 3 weeks in the hospital. Be prepared to have little longer recovery period as I felt awful from the medication they gave me to prevent me from having seizures after the girls were delivered. Good luck!

I am 28 weeks and on Christmas day I had a really sharp pain under my right breast. I did not know this could be a sign for preeclampsia!! I will have to look into that more.

I called my Matria nurse (I am on the t-pump and am having my contractions & bloodpressure monitored) and she paged my doctor because she was afraid it could be something serious. My doctor said to try taking laxatives before going to the hospital. That a blockage in my colon/intestines could cause this kind of pain. I did take the laxatives he recommended and the pain went away in two days.

My blood pressure has not been high so far and I have very, very little swelling in my hands & feet. The under the breast pain may not have anything to do with your preeclampsia. You may want to look into eliminating constipation if this is an issue for you.

Vicki

I remember my dr asking me if I was having that kind of pain (I wasn't) when my bp was elevated. I don't know what that pain means, but I do remember him being worried about it.
Make it as far as you can, but there does come a point where your body just can't take any more. I hope things work out well and you make it for the additional 2 weeks. But if not, things should be just fine b/c your a good ways along already.

Thank you so much for your replies ladies!!!! I am happy to say they just called and said my blood work came back normal! So now I just have to stay down because of the blood pressure but at least it's not preeclampsia. My peri is going to start seeing me twice a week for the duration so I'll feel more confident should something start to go wrong. So back to bed for me! 2 more weeks of misery, YEAHHHH!!!!

Congratulations for making it to 32 weeks. That is wonderful. I was 35 weeks when I was diagnosed with possible Preeclampsia (blood pressure - 150/100). I was far enough along that they went ahead and scheduled an emergency cesarean delivery. Although, I don't recall having the pain underneath my breast b/c everything happened so fast. I just remember not feeling well.

How has your blood pressure been since New Years?
