#350678, "IS THIS JOB BENEATH ME???"

Hi. As you all know it is hard raising triplets and working. I work as a paralegal 2 days a week making $26 an hour and have been doing this for 17 years. On the 2 days I work, my husband watches the kids because, unfortunately, I can no longer rely on family members. Money is extremely tight and I am not used to this and do not like it. However, I cannot work at my law office more than 2 days because I have no coverage for the kids and I really want to be with them. I was thinking about getting a night job at Starbucks and already family members are saying it is ridiculous and beneath me. I, however, do not think so since the hours are extremely flexible, are at night, and I will be earning extra income. Please give me some advice before I take the job and start to hear bulls..t from people.
Thank you.

No job is beneath you when it comes to providing for your kids! From what I understand, Starbucks has great benefits - even for PT employees! Go for it!

A job is a job and if your family and friends were in the same position as you I think they'd understand that.

Beneath you? Absolutely not. Are you over qualified and could do something a little more acceptable in your family's eyes - probably so.

But what they need to understand is that if it works for you and your family for right now then who are they to say anything??

Right now I'm working in an entry level job that I'm 'over qualified' for but the hrs work for us and the stress level is low - major selling point for me at this stage in my life. I've done the high stress job before and I know I can't handle that and being a triplet mom too.

I think that if someone needs a job then no job is 'beneath' them.

It's an honest job, it will allow you to raise your kids, and it will keep your family afloat--why is it then beneath you? Unless your family is willing to help you with child care, then they should have no input in your work/family arrangements.

I have 2 aunts that both work at Starbucks and absolutely love it. One is married to a doctor, so money is not an issue, but she loves the environment and talking with other people. Both of my aunts have their masters degrees, but working at Starbucks gives them great benefits and the hours they want. A couple of family members have given them some light hearted teasing, but both aunts say they get the last laugh, because they are the ones that are happy with their jobs.

I also am thinking about getting a part time job. Like you I want something that allows me to be home with the kids during the day. I have thought about Starbucks, but I know nothing about coffee!

Ignore your family. I think it would be irresponsible not to get another job, whatever it maybe, if you are financially strapped. I commend you for not doing what so many Americans are doing -- going into extreme credit card debt!! Like PP said, you do what you have to for your family. No job is beneath you if you need provide for your family. I work full time as an IT specialist for the gov't making a decent salary and I took a second job at Crate and Barrel when money got tight (this was before the tripz came along). You do what you've got to do. Like PP said, remind your family that if they helped out more, you wouldn't need to get the second job.

Do it!!!

My supervisor (I work at a big University making good money), who makes a lot more than $26/hour (which is of course good money) has a nite job at Macy's in recovery! Recovery are the people who go from department to department straightening the racks and organizing the clothes.

She works like 3-4 shifts a week and does it for extra vacation money and the discount.

Starbucks is a GREAT part-time job!! And, after being a triplet mommy for 2 years it'll be fun and maybe even a bit relaxing. Plus you probably get free coffee drinks!

You should be proud for even considering taking on another job with all the skeptics around you.

Sometimes the "fun jobs" are just that - FUN! In fact, I'd love to take on a part-time job somewhere that gives good discounts. Too bad Target only gives 10% off (when I worked there years and years ago... I wonder if it's more now...)

Good luck!

(BTW, happy belated birthday to your trio!)

Ach, no way. I say it's all in the attitude. My dh, who makes decent money, has delivered pizza for the past two years. At first he was embarrassed to even apply. Then, very quickly, he came to enjoy it...meeting the people, zooming around town, low to no stress, etc. Now he has no problem talking about it and has, on occasion, even bragged about it's benefits (we're debt-free, except for the house). Go for it. I think you'll enjoy it.

I am SO excited to start working at starbucks...
ok i write that but i have not even applied yet! lol.
I planned on doing it when the kids went off to school as we have nobody who will watch the kids while i work and my dh has weird hours and are very unpredictable hours from day to day.

so my plan is on the back burner for now because i just had a baby.
My kids will all (except the baby) go to school this august from 8-2:15. IF I can manage to get my family to watch the baby a few hours a week I am ALL over it!

Starbucks only wants to hire part time (ay least around here) and all part timers who work 20 hours get GREAT benefits, something I NEED!!!
Nope the money is not great, but from what I understand most people who work there love it.
You are constantly busy, time flies, you meet tons of new people and you have a break from your reg. life!

Also have to add that what is the worse thing, start working...hate it... put in your 2 weeks, then your done. You would not even have to tell your family until you know you like it.

Would you not bring home more money if you found a nanny at $12 per hour to cover you while you work an extra day or two at the law office? Your time away from the babies would be the same.

I'm with the others. Your relatives exemplify what is wrong with some of the people in this country.. no job is beneath any of us.

Honest work is honest work. If I were tight on funds, and needed to balance my need to be with them vs the money situation, I would take whatever job fit the bill.

In fact, I'm going to go from a really nice salary to working as a waitress this summer. I sold my stock from my company that I started 15 years ago, and now we are ready to put into action the retirement plans we have been making over the last 2.5 decades of marriage. VP of a company with 50 or so employees to waitress. And I am looking forward to it!

Hey, I also work in the legal field, and working at Starbucks and/or at Barnes & Noble and/or someplace with easy-going friendly people sounds like a major kick in the butt fun thing to do. Just think: No worrying about filing deadlines and what doesn't get done today does not carry over to tomorrow! If you top that with benefits and knowing that your children are not missing you/pining away under the care of someone whose help you cannot afford -- you have the best of all worlds.

Oh, and if you need the money as well, then doing what is responsible for your family is what matters. My hat is off to you! You rock!

You are right, it will probably be a huge difference from the legal field, i.e., deadlines, doing all the work lawyers should be doing, the lawyers, themselves (LOL).

Good for you for being willing to do what it takes to help your family be financially stable. I don't think the job is beneath you.

Is it possible for you to do any of your paralegal work from home in the evenings, since that would earn you much more money for the time?

Hi. Thank you for your advice. I do freelance paralegal work from home, but it not steady. There are evening paralegal jobs in New York City, but I do not want to travel. My current law position, I love & is 2 minutes away. It just that I cannot get help during the day to add additional days. I am going to have to do what I have to do for my family.

I have a part-time job at Crate & Barrel and love it. It used to be my second job when I used to work full-time (before I had the kids) but now I just work the weekends. The interaction with adults is awesome, there's no chit-chat about children, people actually ask me how I am doing and not how are the kids. The money is decent enough (I had zero money coming in before) and the discount is great. I say go for it.

I once saw a show where Suze Orman recommended Starbuck's as an excellent part-time job because of the flexible work hours and awesome benefits for part-time. I think if Suze thinks it is a good deal then it must be!

I also think that it could be a lot of fun! If it is right for you, go for it!!!

I say go for it! I've done so many "beneath me" jobs over the years. And I've enjoyed them a LOT more than some of the "good" jobs. I too think that is what is wrong w/ so many americans. We just can't swallow our pride and do something that other people would say is meaningless work. Enjoy your work, the extra money, the socialization and the time away from your crazy home life including some of those family members!!! The nice part about the job too would be that you really do leave it when you leave for the day!

Hi Lynda! I'm so I never replied to your last e-mail and I thought I'd lost you - here you are!
As far as your question - nothing is beneath you if it works for you and your family. I think you should think it through and if it'll work than go for it! I'll go visit you (I love Starbucks!)!
