#371827, "Twins or Triplets? Opinion appreciated..."

Hi there -

This is my first posting ever on a multiples message board.
I am 10 1/2 weeks pg with twins (found out at a 7 wk
appointment via u/s.) I was looking at my u/s on my computer
and there looks to be 3 sacs. The twins are the two on the
left. At the last minute my doc said she'd get a better
picture and changed positions, then printed out the u/s pic
and gave to me but never looked at it herself. I'm now going
crazy. My mom called to say she sees three -I am now looking
closer and that is what I see! I read that sometimes the
bladder can appear as a dark spot and fool you, but I see a
fetus in that "dark spot" on the right. My doc
says she could have missed it because it was an early
appointment and she focused on the two sacs close together.
Although my husband and I keep thinking...surely she couldn't
have missed the third if it was that obvious - there must be
an explanation. Anyway, 6 long days until my next
appointment - would love an opinion from any of you. I'll
have to let you know what happens. I am going pretty crazy.
This is my husbands and my first - we have conceived
naturally, I was on b/c for 15 years until 3 mos ago. My
side has 4 sets of twins (his side has five). Any opinions
would help me get through the next few days. :)

Sincerely,

Betsy

wow...really does look like 3 to me. Ultrasounds can be
tricky, though, so unfortunately I think you're going to have
to wait until your next one. Good luck!!!

Is this the only picture you have? If you have another,
please post it. I can't tell if the third area is your
bladder or a third baby. I can see why you would think it is
triplets.

Thanks so much for your reply. I only have this
picture...ugh. However, I was just researching the placement
of the bladder via a pregnancy diagram and I no longer think
that could be the bladder. I think that thin canal is just
the vaginal canal. Trying to not be obsessive but it's hard.

Wow...Well we did an IVF procedure and had several US before
we even found out it was triplets. For the first 9 weeks, it
revealed twins, then the next week, it was triplets! Up until
we found out, they kept saying that "there was something
over there...but not sure if it was another one".
"They did state that it could have been one that did not
make it when they were analyzing it. We placed 3 embryos in
and all three were successful!

I've got no medical background whatsoever but that sure as
heck looks like 3 babies to me. That u/s pic looks like mine
from about that time. Let me tell you at about 7-8 weeks when
the RE first saw three sacs (1 good looking, 1 so-so, and 1
mis-shapen, elongated not-real-sure-what-it-is spot) he said
"I can almost guarantee you 90-95% chance of having one
healthy baby out of this pregnancy. Maybe....just maybe you
might have twins. But you won't have triplets."

Ha! My fat, healthy, funny, and LOUD trio are 6.5 months old
now. Whether you have 2 or 3 in there....CONGRATS!!!

Sometimes the Mom's intuition on this is really good - better
than the dr.

At an early ultrasound (maybe 5 weeks?), they told us that we
definitely had two sacs, but one of them didn't look so good
and might not make it. They said to come back in a week, and
they'd tell us if we had two or one.

My wife was studying the ultrasound pictures, and swore she
saw a third one. I wasn't sure if I agreed or not...

A week later, we went back to the dr. The ultrasound tech
said "You're not going to believe this... but you have
triplets."

To add on to the part about the Mom's intuition... my wife
also had a dream that (correctly) told her that we'd have two
girls and a boy.

They missed one of ours in our first ultrasound. The picture
clearly shows only 2 sacs. Then a month later we had another
ultrasound and then we discovered we were having triplets.

It kind of looks like it to me, but I also have zero
knowledge about this stuff. What torture having to wait!

It looks like three to me, but I always find ultrasound photos
confusing.

Are you in CO? Just wondering because of your username.

Good luck. Can't wait to see what your next u/s shows.

That looks like three distinct babies to me! The only thing I
can think of maybe one of them did not have a heart beat so
that's why they told you twins? I see three babies there.

Congratulations. That really does look like triplets. I know
it's frightening. I cried for two weeks when I first found
out. Mainly because I was concerned what effect it would have
on ds. But we are so happy now and they are such a blessing.

Looks like three. One thing I might worry about would be an
echo. When they saw 3 at my u/s the Dr kept looking and
looking not saying anything. It was so obvious on the
screen. He finally started talking saying he was making sure
it wasn't and echo. And how it is common to see the same baby
twice at some angles. So he kept going around to different
angles to be sure there were in fact three and not two with
and echo.

hi Betsy, small hematomas of the wall of the uteros look the
same as a sac in same position (not a scary situation) as
well as other structures which are very close like ovary or
colon...I'm sure you'll find it out the next u/s when sacs
and fetus are bigger.
Congratulation on your pregnancy! twins or triplets is great!

Me too. First two ultrasounds showed twins, third one showed
triplets.

Your's really looks like triplets to me, and I've seen a TON
of ultrasounds from another fertility board I'm on..

Congratulations! I'd bet money you're pregnant with trips.

It looks like 3 to me also.

When I had my 1st u/s the doctor told me I had twins and I
kept looking at my u/s picture and I said I see 3. Noone
else saw it but me. At the next appointment the doctor told
me oh it's not twins, you have triplets.

I know the waiting is horrible - good luck to you!

I am going w/ the majority here & saying that it looks
like there are 3 in there. My 1st u/s at 6w 6d & it was
difficult to get all 3 babies in 1 shot w/o them looking
funny like yours. I can't wait to hear an update!

Hi Betsy,

I am not a doctor, but that sure looks a lot like the u/s of
a triplet pregnancy!!

At 7 weeks we were told it was definitely twins, and that
there was a third sac, but it could be empty. That u/s was
on video and we took it home. At home we watched the video,
and it was very obvious that there was a third baby in that
sac, though it would kind of go in and out of view. My
husband and I looked at that video, looked at each other, and
laughed and cried. Triplets were confirmed the next week.

Those three sacs are now freshman in high school: smart,
beautiful, kind, loud and fun.

Best of luck to you, and congratulations!!

Looks like three to me too. We saw twins on our first u/s
with our triplets. On the second u/s the doctor confirmed the
twins looked good and as he moved the angle number three came
into view - I actually saw it first! Cue panicked `what`s
blinking on the top there? OMG there`s three isn`t there?`
yep another heartbeat - I remember going home and crying - I
had a three year old and a just turned 2 year old at home - I
was worried how I would cope but is has been so much better
than I feared those first few days after I found out - they
are little blessings for sure.

Hey I'm an ultrasound tech it could be several things it could
be a vessel, ovary, a bleed(nothing to worry about),or it
could be a third. Do you have anymore pictures? It is not
your bladder your bladder is on the other side and it is down
to far. When I first found out I was pregnant the dr saw 2
sacs with yolk sacs and a third that looked abnormal which is
what it looked like to me( I've been doing ultrasound for
about 9 years now) when I scanned my self 4 days later there
were 3 normal sacs with 3 normal babys and 3 heart beats. I
know it hard but you will just have to wait for the next
ultrasound.

hi Betsy-
Just saw this thread- I'm curious too :-) I can recommend and
excellent doctor for twins or triplets. He saved my babies- I
would not have my triplets here today if it weren't for Dr
Porreco !!!

If the doc said twins, it is probably twins. I had the same
thing on my first ultrasound. I would upload it for you but
I am on bed rest and can't get to the other computer! I
clearly had four sacs. But looking closer during the
ultrasound, only three had little "yolks" as they
say. The fourth was just fluid. On the print-outs, you do
not catch all the detail that you do while performing the
ultrasound. So all the yolks may or may not be visible on
one picture to make it easy to figure out. Everyone who
looked at mine said they saw four sacs and there were! Just
not four babies. Fluid sacs are not uncommon early on and
will disappear. I saw it at my 6 week ultrasound and it was
gone by 8 weeks.

Any way it turns out, good luck!

My first u/s was at 6 weeks 1 day and it was clearly
three...the Doc knew it immediately. It seems like a big
thing to miss...though I am sure it happens. Can't wait to
hear!!
