#379467, " Exposure of babies to possibly sick daily caregivers"

My Mom called me this morning and said she has been coughing
and clearing her throat during the last couple of hours of
sleep before getting out of bed. She thinks she may be coming
down with something but she also has some allergies and can't
tell anything at this point.
She was over yesterday for several hours and she prepared
bottles, fed them and kissed them as she has done practically
every day since they have been home from the NICU. If she is
coming down with a cold, have they already been exposed? She
is unsure if she should stay away for a day or two to see
what develops or come today anyway. My thought is that it is
like my DH or me coming down with something since she helps
us everyday. Any thoughts or advice is welcomed. Ironically,
she works in public health and is due to have her flu shot
tomorrow in the very first flu shot clinic for employees
only. The rest of us will get ours on the 15th.

If she is sick, they've probably been exposed already. I
don't know how old your babies are, but I guess it all
depends on what you are comfortable with. Some people will
say to stay away, some won't. I think that call can only be
made by you. If they are sick, I am sure your mom will still
be there to help out, right?

I had a sore throat and some coughing for two days last week.
Since I'm the primary caregiver it would have been near
impossible for me to stay away. Luckily, the kids (so far)
have not shown signs they are getting sick.

Here's what I did (I am still doing it just in case):

1. Wash my hands (constantly);
2. Use purell all the time (for instance, every time I
prepared a bottle I used purell before I touch each bottle);
after I prepared a bottle I rinsed it in warm flowing water.

3. Did not touch their hands or faces;
4. My doctor said I can wear a mask which is over protecting
as you don't really need that as long as I'm washing my
hands. I did wear a mask for a day. Make sure the mask does
not get wet from breathing as it becomes ineffective;
5. Took their temperature twice a day (one in the morning and
one at night) to see any fluctuations;
6. Watch for other signs of illness (unusually fussiness,
lethargy, loss of appettite etc.);
7. Also, I recently stopped my prenatal vitamins since my
prescription ran out so after I got sick I started taking
vitamins again to prevent me from getting sick.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Have your babies started their RSV shots for the season? If
not, I would probably ask her to stay away a couple of days
and see if something develops. I would spray Lysol around
the house just in case.

Good luck!

I am sure they have already been exposed but I wouldn't risk
it for a couple more days. I would have her stay away a
couple of days but again it is hard to do. Since she does
help you everyday it is just like one of us parents when we
are sick we can't stay away. We have all been sick this last
week. Maddie started with a cough and then preston got a
ruptured ear drum from an ear infection which she also got.
Then now I have strep throat. Even knows we are all on
antibotics they still told me to be careful around them and
not kiss them alot or anything. It is up to you. But usually
if anyone in my family thinks they are coming down with
something I ask them to stay away for a couple of days.
