#397537, "Any hope of dropping the term "DH"?"

Hi,

This is inspired by a recent thread, but not written in response to it, or aimed at any one individual or poster - I promise. As a frequent reader and sometime contributor to this forum, and as a minority here (a dad), I just want to express my outright loathing, my complete and utter disdain for the term "DH." I've been on this site for half a year and I have no idea what it stands for. My guess is either "Dedicated Husband" or "Designated Husband," but no matter what it stands for, it basically seems to me to marginalize the role of fathers in the parenting process, and to lump all of us together into one homogenous group. It also reads as some secret, exclusionary code. I completely understand how triplet moms can often feel that the burden of parenting falls too heavily upon them, and I'm sure no matter how much we dads contribute, we will never quite equal the monumental personal sacrifices involved in triplet mothering. But just so you know, being labeled a DH (and by the way, I can think of something ELSE that might stand for), doesn't exactly make me feel appreciated for anything.

Just saying.

Thanks for the responses.

To be fair, I think all internet abbreviations are out of control, and those specifically oriented to certain communities (infertility, triplets, etc.) have the effect of excluding newcomers from the dialogue. But in all contexts it annoys me. I routinely take "LOL" as a sign of intellectual laziness, IYKWIM.

As for the DH, it's fine for the initiates. I've never seen DW on here or elsewhere, and I've searched in vain to try to figure out what DH stands for. Just giving you the perspective of a relative newcomer who cares about words. I'll try to relax now.

" LOL is a sign of intellectual laziness."

ROTFLMA

Maybe you are too smart for the internet. I would try and stay away from it. LOL!

Um, don't know about the "intellectual laziness" as the abbreviations come along w/ the new texting/message board world we live in.

BTW, I got a kick out of your signature!

I used DH WAY before I ever had any children.
Before any type of preg/fert/parenting board I used them.
I had to post many times to new boards when I was learning to ask what certain ones meant, like KWIM, that one took me YEARS to figure out.
I always thought it meant Darling Husband OR Dear Husband.
I had children and use dd and ds.
I have seen on many boards in the past dw and my dh uses dw when he refers to me.
I also use LOL alot when I am reading something and actually laugh out loud.
Call it whatever you want but it is just like calling your mother MOM or grandfather GRANDPA.

But then again you might not abbreviate anything.
