#397537, "Any hope of dropping the term "DH"?"
|
Hi,
This is inspired by a recent thread, but not written in response to it, or aimed at any one individual or poster - I promise. As a frequent reader and sometime contributor to this forum, and as a minority here (a dad), I just want to express my outright loathing, my complete and utter disdain for the term "DH." I've been on this site for half a year and I have no idea what it stands for. My guess is either "Dedicated Husband" or "Designated Husband," but no matter what it stands for, it basically seems to me to marginalize the role of fathers in the parenting process, and to lump all of us together into one homogenous group. It also reads as some secret, exclusionary code. I completely understand how triplet moms can often feel that the burden of parenting falls too heavily upon them, and I'm sure no matter how much we dads contribute, we will never quite equal the monumental personal sacrifices involved in triplet mothering. But just so you know, being labeled a DH (and by the way, I can think of something ELSE that might stand for), doesn't exactly make me feel appreciated for anything.
Just saying.

Thanks for the responses.
To be fair, I think all internet abbreviations are out of control, and those specifically oriented to certain communities (infertility, triplets, etc.) have the effect of excluding newcomers from the dialogue. But in all contexts it annoys me. I routinely take "LOL" as a sign of intellectual laziness, IYKWIM.
As for the DH, it's fine for the initiates. I've never seen DW on here or elsewhere, and I've searched in vain to try to figure out what DH stands for. Just giving you the perspective of a relative newcomer who cares about words. I'll try to relax now.

Um, don't know about the "intellectual laziness" as the abbreviations come along w/ the new texting/message board world we live in.
BTW, I got a kick out of your signature!
