#397537, "Any hope of dropping the term "DH"?"

Hi,

This is inspired by a recent thread, but not written in response to it, or aimed at any one individual or poster - I promise. As a frequent reader and sometime contributor to this forum, and as a minority here (a dad), I just want to express my outright loathing, my complete and utter disdain for the term "DH." I've been on this site for half a year and I have no idea what it stands for. My guess is either "Dedicated Husband" or "Designated Husband," but no matter what it stands for, it basically seems to me to marginalize the role of fathers in the parenting process, and to lump all of us together into one homogenous group. It also reads as some secret, exclusionary code. I completely understand how triplet moms can often feel that the burden of parenting falls too heavily upon them, and I'm sure no matter how much we dads contribute, we will never quite equal the monumental personal sacrifices involved in triplet mothering. But just so you know, being labeled a DH (and by the way, I can think of something ELSE that might stand for), doesn't exactly make me feel appreciated for anything.

Just saying.

Wow - I've obviously ruffled a few feathers. Sorry...

I'll just chime in to say that I disagree that DH is a meaningful timesaver for "husband." Internet abbreviations are statements of membership in a community, NOT abbreviations. They often have us using phrases, such as laughing out loud, dear husband, in my honest opinion, that we wouldn't otherwise use - as such, they're devices of conformity. I really shouldn't comment more, because I know this response will just inspire another several flames. Fire away, I can take it. Just know I still like you people.

Well D. May I call you D? I did not know who you were but you will surely stand out now. So welcome to TC and you started off the right way.

Would you go to France and expect the locals to speak English just for you? Sorry the internet lingo is annoying to you but if you give it time you too will conform to its evil ways!

Hehe - thanks for the welcome.

I've been using the internet since 1993. If 100 percent of internet users used the abbreviations, I might agree with your analogy. But they don't. I'm unlikely to change my mind after this many years as an active web/net user, but I appreciate your encouraging view that there may indeed be hope for me!

I also did chart some 20 odd posts here before this screed made me infamous!

D (my screed is NOT in fact against ALL abbreviation, much as people are caricaturing it to be...)

Dan. Dan. Dan. You ARE conforming. You're getting bitchy and not shaving. If you aren't showering, you've truly become one of us. (Who got the microchip in? Good job people!)
