#485392, "crying/screaming/whining through feeding (solids)"

Hello!
My three are 8 months old and eat their solids three times a day. More often than not, one or more of them are crying throughout the feeding. This usually is mild at the breakfast feeding and gets worse at lunch and then really bad in the evening. I'm guessing they are just being impatient waiting for their turn to come around? Has anyone else encountered this problem and what did you do to lessen the crying - any distraction tips? Thanks!

Given that they are needing to wait their turn, I'm assuming they are being spoon fed right now. Do you think they might be ready for some finger foods? cheerios or small bits of fruit? I found cheese the great silencer (you could try shredded cheese at first)!

Anyway, I'm not sure what their adjusted age is so, they may not be quite ready....

good luck

We have thought about finger foods, but haven't started any yet. That is a great idea though - thanks. They were born at 35 weeks - so about 7 mos. adjusted.

I was going to suggest finger foods as well, but if they aren't ready you could also give them a toy that is easily washable - such as a rubber teething ring. Could also consider those mesh feeders since they mostly get the juice out by gnawing on it.

My kids LOVED Mum Mums (and still do) and when they didn't have teeth they just kind of sucked on it and it dissolved.

Mine do the same thing and it makes me crazy. It's so hard to tolerate them screaming at you. I try to have some Puffs ready before I put them in their seats. Once they are strapped in the screaming starts.

We started with Puffs, even breaking them in half for our smallest one. And breaking Cheerios in half too. Sometimes just putting a few on their tray will occupy them as they are trying to pick them up or pushing them around. Also ditto on the Mum Mums, they seem to dissolve. My girl struggled with them and I broke them up too.

Agreed with the toys too. Or I sing songs to them as I am feeding them, it seems to distract them for awhile!

When mine started getting fussy (right about 7 months) when we started finger foods and they were happy as can be. We did cheerios, cut up grapes-blueberries-strawberries-bananas, the Gerber yogurt drops-puffs-carrots-apples- ravioli, just to give you some ideas. I would definitely give it a try. It will be pretty messy in the beginning but they will get the hang of it.
Good luck!

thanks, guys!
we tried the puffs last night (it was the only finger food we had on hand) and it worked for most of the time!

Like another poster, I sang songs to distract them. It really did work. I think I sang The Wheels on the Bus about a million times!

Are you feeding all 3 at once assembly line style? None of mine really had to wait for too long to eat. One bite for each and move on to another kid.
