My one son who is not very good at communicating what is really wrong with him had very bad silent reflux as a baby (so I never saw him spit up) seems to be acting a little strange lately and I'm trying to figure out if his reflux could have possibly came back. As a baby he had this strange coughy cry when his reflux bothered him once we found the right medecine and had his dose adjusted accordingly the coughy cry would go away. He is now 3 and has been off his reflux medecine for about 1 1/2 years with no issues. Recently he got put on a stronger antibiiotic than needed beause of red dye (seperate post) and 2 days after he started with that coughy cry and said he was in pain (he kept pointing to his mouth) so I took him off it and found out from someone on here (thank you by the way) that Walgreens had the dye free Amoxicilan, so I started giving him that and he was fine for a few days and all of a sudden the past couple days he has started with that coughy cry and waking up a million times a night. When he wakes up I ask him what is wrong and he says he doesnt know, but it's the coughy cry that just keeps making my mind go back to the reflux. I try asking him where it hurst but I think sometimes he just answers what he thinks I want to hear, half the time he tells me it's his teeth evern though they are all in. I can point to almost anything on him and he will say that is what hurts him. I don't know if maybe the antibiotics could be bothering his reflux.

Sorry for the long post

I don't know if this helps, but my DS has had reflux from birth (he did/does bring up food, he just doesn't cry from it) and we took him off of the meds at a year and change. He did fine, no fussy behavior, but continued to burp/swallow and occasionally bring food/fluids completely up.

We put him back on the meds just to nix any acid damage. He is about 6 months younger than yours, but he still has bad reflux. If he didn't actually bring up food, we probably wouldn't think he still had it.

Unrelated, we put him back on milk over the last year too and thought he was fine until a month in when his regurg stuff happened a lot more often. We took him back off milk and after 3 weeks, it went back to where it was before. I had always assumed if it was dairy, you'd see immediate change bad when they were on and good when off, but mine takes weeks between to see change.

Not sure if that helps, since yours cries but doesn't bring up and ours is the opposite, but wanted to give you our experience.

Two of our daughters had this happen. They came off the meds (prevacid) but then had to go back on some meds and use a reflux pillow. One did it at about 2.5, the other about a year later. We only noticed lousy breath, funny voice, and repeated sinus issues on the latter one. They both went back on medication, but only at bedtime, and they only needed zantac or axid rather than the PPI's

We also learned that certain foods right before bed trigger the reflux worse than others....so keep an eye out for that. If you can, perhaps you can give the last dose a little earlier in the evening. It may clear his stomach by the time he heads to bed then.

Thankfully the antibiotic is only for 10 days...

Yes! This just happened with both of my boys. We had taken many trips to urgent care and the ER even for non stop coughing that we thought was all asthma, because they have that too. They were already seeing a pulminary specialist for their asthma and were then also referred to a GI specialist since reflux can be one of the main triggers of asthma and also coughing can also be a symptom of reflux. One of our sons had a PH Probe which was not pleasant but proved that he did still have very significan reflux just like he did when he was an infant. So both of our boys have been on nexium, reflux medication since the spring and finally their asthma and reflux is controlled. It has been a miracle drug for us. I would highly recommend seeing a pediatric GI specialist to see if this could be reflux bothering your son again.

I'm not sure about reflux coming back, but my girls were on Amox for strep throat and the pharmacist told me to watch for an upset stomach. I guess it could irritate the stomach and if it does you should give it with food. I always gave it at breakfast and dinner so we didn't see any issues, but could that be the problem? Do you give it right before bed? Try it with food to see if there's a difference.
