The price is there -- about $2400 w/o taxes!
I have a metal loft bed with a desk underneath -- bought used. It could easily be adapted with drawers under the bed. I also have a wood bunk bed (now used as two singles). Without too much work, the bottom bunk could be removed and dresser drawers put under it. One might have to add a little bracing to take the place of the lower bunk.
I am going to have to replace the wood bunk beds soon...the boys are getting too big!
From the same company with the $2400 bed, here is a stripped down version for $200:

That is basically what I thought of doing with the wood bunk bed.

Do you feel handy (can use a skill saw or jig saw, cordless drill, and can measure)? I was planning to build my kids their beds but we kept postponing for safety reasons, and now they want to split up into 2 rooms, so less need for the bunks. Bunk beds are pretty easy to build if you can get ahold of ready-made designs. Loren GGG Jan.2005 @ 28wks

If you have an IKEA neaby check there. We have the bunk bed version of the link posted for my son but we want to get the loft for his sister. She has the smallest room so we need the space too.

A WARNING ABOUT BUNK BEDS
Please take this for what it's worth and considering your own situation, but we had a near disaster with bunk beds and I want to share it to prevent it from happening to anyone else.
We moved into a house and had to put all 3 boys into the same room. They were not quite 4 at the time. My boys are tall and the rails on the bed were quite high and so I felt that they would be safer in them than some other children tehir age. We set up the bed and had long talks about safety and messing around on them with the boys and they seemed to understand.
My one son one night fell off of the bunkbed hitting his head on the wood dresser and closet door railing. He was completely knocked out and convulsing by the time I ran from the kitchen to the bedroom after hearing him hit the floor. The other two boys saw him fall and immediately started asking me if he was dead. I immediately called 911. By then he was throwing up but still unconscious. When the ambulance and firetruck showed up my neighbor came over who is a nurse at the hospital to watch the other children while I went to the hospital with my son. My parents later came to be with my kids. DH was working half way across the state at the time so I called him and had him start home. We ambulanced over to the local hospital where CAT scans and MRIs were performed before the helicoptered him to the Children's Hospital in Denver. Fortunately, DH was in Denver by the time our son landed and other than the flight over he was never without any family with him. I then drove to Denver. We spent the 1st 24 hours in the emergency room and our son never woke up, although he dry heaved most of the night. We spent 11 days at Children's with a traumatic closed head trauma. Our neurologist said it was like he had been in a high speed car crashing into a brick wall. The MRIs revealed damage to the very center of his brain, near where the brain stem comes in. On the outside he had a very small bruise on his left temple. When he finally woke up he could not sit up unassisted. By the time we left the hospital he could walk only if someone was holding his hand. He had to crawl around the house like a baby to move around. We ended up having to do almost a years worth of Physical and Occupational therapy with him. For years he had balance issues. He is now 9 and we feel so lucky that he has overcome the damage done on this accident.
We eventually found out that he was trying to reach a light shown on the ceiling by one of his brothers when he slipped and fell. Something any child might do and never think about the possible consequences. He wasn't jumping on the bed, so he thought he'd be fine.
Most children who are hurt on bunkbed falls receive broken bones, usually arms from bracing themselves from the fall.
Bunkbeds are not recommended for any child under the age of 6, even with the rails.
If you have a ceiling fan in the room with a bunk bed the child can be whacked in the head by the fan really hard.
I know you may be planning this for sometime down the road, but please wait until they are at a minimum of 6 before using them.

Scary story, Kim. Glad everything turned out right with time.
I think we started using a bunk bed when the boys were 5. By this age, my boys were very use to climbing trees, rocks and anything that stood long enough to climb...including a rope swing in the backyard. And they had taken a few falls, so they knew the dangers of falling.
But 6 is still a good general minimum age for bunk beds.

Hi.
I don't know if University Loft still sells to the public, but we bought our loft beds when they were selling at a furniture store here in the Indianapolis area. They are a company that started here in IN and sold to universities before branching out. Their construction is solid wood and excellent quality and they build (or at least did when we bought) in the US.
We bought their beds so we could make a "junior loft" set...it's one of those bunks where the top bunk is only about 4 feet high and the bed underneath is perpendicular, super close to the floor. (think of willis' and arnold's beds from "different strokes") We never did end up bunking them like that, but these beds are awesome because the mattresses can be adjusted to any height on the frame, up to about 4 feet high. When my kids were 6 (or maybe 7),we put a short, 2 drawer dresser (sold with the bed sets as a dresser/cushioned seat) under the bed so we had storage, but the mattresses were only a few feet off the ground. They used the dressers as their step up into bed (again, designed to have weight on them). We had bed rails for the longest time, then graduated to putting a foam pool noodle under their mattress pad so they couldn't easily roll off the bed.
Here is a link (although they don't show 2 beds set up as a low junior loft):
http://uloft.com/gsa-market/solid-wood-series/item/67-enlisted-junior-loft
We love the options these beds give us....
We moved recently, so my kids now all have their own rooms. My son has his bed set at the highest bar, so he can easily sit under his bed and read or whatever. My girls both have their mattresses set at almost normal height, but 1 DD has hers up a little bit so she can easily store her stuffed animals under there.
We bought the "bunking" sets for each of the beds, so that when they get older, we can make their beds into regular bunk/loft bed height and put desks, etc, underneath.
My kids are about the same age as the previous poster, and her story is the reason we chose this option over regular bunk beds....I remember reading her posts right after the incident happened...it was heartbreaking. Kim, I am so glad to hear that your little guy is doing great!
Good Luck,
