http://www.aoltv.com/2011/12/07/toddlers-locked-in-their-bedroom-on-americas-supernanny-vide/

So I'm watching this clip and listening to the horror in the "supernanny"'s voice, and all I can think is... what the heck?

My youngest (the threesome) kids are locked in their room right now! I'm I crazy?!

I absolutely locked mine in, and I would do it again. It was unsafe to do otherwise in our case. If others don't have to - bully for them. We parents have to sleep sometime and we do what we have to do to function AND keep everyone safe.

I did not watch the show so I don't know what "other" ways they found, and would be interested in hearing if it kept working. But we tried everything we could think of before deciding to lock the door. I did not feel a second of misgiving about it and I am sorry that the mom on that tape does, because she should not.

PS I guess the difference between that and a gate might be because they can see through the gate. The gate worked for my oldest 3 children, but with the triplets, there was not a gate in this world that could keep them in if they wanted out and there was no one else around to stop them. No, they were much safer locked in.

This is definitely a case of unless you have multiples of your own, shut up! And I only rarely play that card.

I wonder how she would feel about crib tents?

I didn't look at the clip, but I locked my kids in their bedroom for just over a year from 3 when they went to toddler beds to just past 4. I don't regret it a bit. It would have been hell if they had the freedom before they had been responsible enough to deal with it.

I'm not a fan of locking kids in a room but I can see why people do. After I heard the "supernanny" say "Don't tell me you can't think of another way to keep them in that room." my first thought was "baby gate" but my question to the "supernanny" would be--what's the difference between locking them in and putting a baby gate on the door? Or what's the difference between putting a baby gate between a kitchen and family room, and them being locked into the family room for play time. People do that with dogs too but we don't compare children to being treated like animals in that instance.

You are not wrong... "supernanny" has no clue what it is to live with multiples! I had to, only way to keep them safe... a babygate can be climbed over, or as we all know, climb-assisted by siblings. Unless you are the parent to multiples, you have NO clue!

The only thing "wrong" with these parents is they didn't buy crib tents. And, heck, I used to shake the Cheerios out directly on the carpeting to save time. It's too bad these moms didn't turn to the multiple's community for instruction.

That is a FAKE super nanny. From what I can gather, she owns daycares. A real nanny would realize that REAL people have to sleep, eat, work, shower, etc. and they don't get paid for it, get time off when sick, get a vacation, or get to clock out when the shift is done. They also don't get to send home children who won't abide by the rule or who are sick.

The comments on that are worse than the video. I hope this MOM of HOM's finds a good multiple community...if only online...to get REAL advice from.

I ALWAYS locked mine in when I slept. I had this fear of a kiddo getting up in the night and trying to find me, and falling down the stairs or walking out the door or something. And that was with my kids in crib tents!!

And a baby gate is NOT enough when you have triplets. It did not take that long for my kiddos to figure out that one could lay down and another could use that one for a step, and over the gate they went!

The arguement against it that I have heard is about fire, but I really don't get that. If my house was on fire, I would want to know EXACTLY where my kids were so I could get them and get out. I would not want toddlers roaming a smoke-filled house!

Mine were contained until they were old enough and had enough self-control to stay in their room unless they needed to go to the potty or were sick or whatever. Even with their doors closed, we could EASILY hear them if they needed us! It's not like they have those soft little newborn cries - my kids are LOUD when they want to be!

We have been locking the trio in their room at night for the last few months, since moving to big kid beds. I don't see an end to it any time soon, and I do not feel bad about it in he least. My nephew at 2 1/2 got out of his house in the wee hours of the morning, thankfully he was found by a neighbor. My brother (who is a police officer) installed a chain lock at the top of the front door. My nephew used a broom handle to unlock it and got out again. They ended up locking his door. They got so lucky, a couple times...we don't want to take a chance on our luck running out.

We don't lock our kids in their room. Not because I don't want to but because there are no locks in the door. We just took out the door after they kept slamming it. We have gates instead. I don't understand the aversion to locking the door. Sure, I did not do it with my singleton but he was ONE child. Multiples are an entirely different ball game.

Even some safety devices and child proofing do not work for multiples. For instance, that foam one puts on the door hinges to prevent the door from closing on tiny fingers, well, my kids pushed the door so hard, it came off the hinges. One kid can't do that but 3 combined, it was a piece of cake. Or those spring drawer locks, they don't work either because there are three pairs of hands trying to get in there and it takes just one hand to try to push it close and get the other's fingers caught--we learned that the hard way too. So before people start judging and scoffing, they need to walk in our shoes for just one day.

She's no Jo from the old Supernanny.

To be honest - I've not had to lock my children in their room - but they are still in cribs (will be 3 in April). When they do move to toddler beds, if my climber manages to get over the baby gate - hell yes I'll lock the door - WAY SAFER.

And I also will say that putting the child in time out to enforce nap time (or bed time) for nearly 2 hours after the start of nap would be more chaotic then them just not taking a nap...not sure I agree with her tactics on that one.

Marisa

I NEVER felt it was necessary to lock my children in the room. To each his own but it just seems cruel to me. The ball and chain we fastened to their legs was MORE than enough to keep them put.

The link didn't work for me but I have watched the show. The episode I watched, the parent locked their kid in as punishment. I personally believe there are lots better ways to punish starting with positive re-enforcment of GOOD actions. I see no issues with sleep time.

People widely accept that supernanny is right. I believe Supernanny and American Supernanny simply love confrontation. They have very negative attitudes.

American Supernanny says don't hug your kids after time out. They already servrled their time, why not show them you are no longer disappointeed in them and you can reset.

Anyway. Supernannys have good tactics but they seem to be good at daycare parenting....not personal parenting.
