#487075, "Bickford Triplets arrive in Texas"

Yesterday morning at 510 am Carter Eugene, Braden Lane, and Tenley Marie were born at The Women's Hospital of Texas, in Houston. Carter and Tenley weighed in at 2lbs 5ozs and Braden was 2lbs 10ozs. All are doing well at this point in the NICU. Carter had a rough midday yesterday but responded to treatment very well. We were blessed to make it to 27w and 6d, we know, with all of the prayers we not only received from folks here but from friends and family around the world. Mom is recovering nicely also.

TY TC family from the Bickfords and we are already looking forward to our first TC vacation a couple years from now.

Craig

TY all for the warm welcome to the world. Our first 60 hours have been a little more exciting then the doctors or myself would have liked, but every one is hanging in there. The doctor today told me that she would have liked for their first 48 hours to have gone better and that they obviously did not know that there was a book that they were supposed to follow. I am blaming that on their mom, until she reads this and then I will take the blame.

On day one Carter's lungs were not working and it was very touch and go for a while. They change him over to a high frequency oscillating ventilator which he responded to well.

Both Braden and Carter tended to be fighting the vent, so they have been on morphine since day one. Tenley was our rock star until this morning when she took a back step and had to have her vent setting increased.

Tonight we were informed that the boys had a Gram Positive test result, and that the antibiotic have now been changed. Tenley had not been tested for this on Friday due to her not showing many lung issues, but with her back step today, and the fact that I told the doctor about the possibility of a second broken sac, she decided to go ahead with the different antibiotics for her also.

God has truly showed his face during the trials that we have faced to this point and we will continue to lean on him during every difficult situation.

God bless
Craig and Angie

My little boy had to be on the oscillating vent. It is a scary while they are going through it but my little boy is 2 now and doing great. Hang in there, things will get better as they get bigger and stronger.

Oh the memories!! Our little guy was also on the oscillating vent and for s long time. The nurses chalked it up to WWB syndrome ( wimpy white boy). . Eventually he did get off it and the vent ( before kindergarten. Hee Hee). He was lazy!! Our little girls were on the vent too but not as long. CPAP was longer. Hopefully they will improve quickly. Infections are so common in the NICU.

Having triplets born early is a trip and the NICU is one of those fun, scary rides that you love and hate!! Our NICU stay was 5 months but in the end we got to get 3 very healthy babies who are in Kindergarten.

Please keep us updated!
Suzan.

Craig & Angie, congrats on your miracles! Just wanted to chime in that one of our guys was on the oscillating vent for a few days as well as on morphine so he wouldn't fight the vent. All of our nurses & dr's kept reminding us that the fight is a good thing.... you want them to have that fighting spirit!!!!

Hang in there, these first few days/weeks are a challenge and roller coaster. Take it day by day, minute by minute. Before you know it you will be on the roller coaster of taking bottles and this will be a distant memory!!

Good luck and please keep everyone posted!

Another quick update/report here...

The doctors think that they found the problem with Braden and Carter's lungs, as well as the result for Tenley's back step the other day... they tested positive for a Gram Negative bacteria, which 2 days later turned out to be e coli! They have been on a different antibiotic sense Sunday when the cultures starting showing gram negative rods being grown. They went ahead and started Tenley on the same antibiotic because of the back step that she took and ordered a culture to be sure, and sure enough she had it also. :S

We also got word on Tuesday that each of our babies have brain bleeds. Carter has a grade 3 as well as a grade 4, and Braden and Tenley both have Bilateral Grade 3's.

On a positive note yesterday was the most stable day for all three of them. I could tell when my wife was filling me in on what the doctor had told her that even the doctor was very happy for us, which was exactly what we needed.

We are both adjusting to life out of the hospital after our 35 day stay. It keeps amazing me how many blessing we continue to receive day after day.

We are starting to meet other parents that are now a part of our NICU family and we can only imagine how close to some of the families we will grow. In fact one of the families delivered 25 week twins 2 days before us. Their son is in the same pod as Braden and Tenley, and I already can see us becoming fast family friends.

My babies were born at 29w5d and we faced a long NICU stay as well. As I said earlier one of my sons was on the oscillating vent for a week.

For the first few weeks we heard a lot of scary news and did a lot of scary tests, but the nurses kept telling us this piece of advice. Listen and learn, but just take breaths and keep going right now. Babies are MIRACLES. Their bodies can overcome & correct issues that we could never believe possible. Their brains are growing so fast every single minute. They are so resilient and we saw this first hand with our three.

Keep us updated!!

We are now 10 days into our NICU stay with the little ones and I am happy to report that all are making great strides. Other than Braden having to have an NEC on Friday morning, we had an excellent 4 days. There is a good chance that we will be able to hold our little girl, Tenley for the first time today. Also it is looking like Carter will be taken off of the high frequentcy vent at some point today and placed on a conventional vent.

Here is to praying that all continues to progress nicely and to hoping that I have many many more of these types of updates to report.

PS My wife and I are huge FB fans, so if you would like to keep a little closer tabs on our families progress, send me a private message and I will tell you where you can find us there.

Craig
