This is to anyone with a third or fourth grader or a teacher... My three are in 3rd grade and they have no spelling test. They did in 1st and 2nd grade but not anymore. Why? How are they going to learn how to spell or even look up some words that don't spell the way they sound? Is this like the new math?

We do still have spelling tests in 4th grade. Ironically, it is "new spelling"...a new spelling program that our school got involved with a couple of years ago. But, there are still spelling words, and spelling tests.

I do agree with you. Spelling is something that should be taught.

My nieces school doesn't do spelling in 3rd grade. They say they are focusing more on vocabulary. No, kids need to learn to spell! I don't care what people say about spell check and such, being a poor speller will handicap you.

My trio is in 3rd grade at a Catholic school that is known for its academic excellence and has weekly spelling words, tests and a coordinating spelling "packet" that helps them learn to use the words correctly. They've had spelling words and tests since 1st grade. Spelling bee opportunities are offered beginning in 4th or 5th grade I believe.

I was a college English major and pre-trio was a writer and editor for a regional magazine. Misspelled words are one of my biggest pet peeves. It's cute when they're little and are learning phonetically, but it gets to a point where some of our unpredictable English language just has to be memorized!!
