Who are the reputable background check companies? They all look shady.

I bought a 1 month subscription to care.com but I have one applicant not coming from them.

I'm in Canada - the police do it here...not so in your area? Also there is a check through "child and family services" - a Provincial Government program...is there any State run checks?

There are several ways you can do a background check - For a sexual predator, you simply do it online. You could send them for a DCS check, and also as someone else mentioned, the police can do a background check as well. Our church checks out the nursery workers -we simply fill out a form that gets processed.

We too used care.com and sittercity.com both have given us 3 really great nannys over the past 3 years. However, even though the sites say they do a background check, it's pretty basic and I have always done my own as well.

Because I did my own, I was able to see that one of the "hopefuls" was charged with a petty crime, but never convicted so I brought that up. Had we not seen this, I might have made a bad mistake.

We used www.intelius.com all 3 times.

Also, if we didn't have sufficient references we didn't even pursue!
