#487774, "scan thermometer?"

we are still taking temps and doing everything according to the nicu schedule as we just got home 3 days ago for the first time. Would it be wise to buy a scan thermometer? If so, what kind do you recommend? We want to continue taking temps for a while since it is UNSEASONABLY HOT right now and we just got our triplets home. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide me with!!! -Justin Angie Ryan, Norah, & Lucas

We never checked the temps when we got home, as they were doing fine in that department while in the hospital.

You will be so busy with everything else, I think you could safely drop that routine.

We took temps for a while after the kids came home, but with the digital thermometers because that's what we had. The info actually came in useful later. Two of my 3 typically run low (like 97 or so) so when they get to 100 they're pretty ill, as opposed to the 3rd who run normal (98.6) but spikes hard in a short period of time. Although I dose her when her temp hits 100, I don't start making calls to the ped. unless I can't get her temp down.

My sister had given us the one I registered for (scan thermometer I mean) which was an Exergen. Our ped. uses the same one. I use it quite frequently but mine are older now. What did your ped say, or did you forget to ask? Good luck!

We stopped taking temps at home. Once the babies got into open cribs they can hold their own temp fine. It is just hospital policy to continue to take temp. If you think they are getting overheated or worry about that then you can. I used a scan thermometer that I got at Wal-Mart. It was fine until the babies ate it. Then I bought the braun ear thermometer and I love it. The babies no longer get to play with it.

Congratualtion!
We got an Exergen temporal scan thermometer...it was quite $$$ but you can find a similar one at a good medical drug store. In hindsight I would not have spent the money - I didn't know you could get them locally. Anyway --- we used it for our first singleton and then again with our GGG -- it's been a good investment overall.

cheers.
