#487867, "Potty training advice for boys"

Okay this sounds so stupid but I can't figure out what to do. One of my boys is potty trained but I have to physically push his "birdie"as we call it and hold it the whole time he is peeing or he will completely soak his pants. He is too short to teach how to stand and pee and honestly I don't think he would really "get" the aiming thing anyways. I tried "tucking" the birdie in and closing his legs and the pee won't come over the top but I noticed the back of his pants are soaking wet still because the pee comes straight through the spot where the toilet seat meets the toilet. I really would like him to be able to go slightly more independently like my daughter does but it will be a mess. I don't know if it is his anatomy If you know what I mean or what because I have talked to other parents of boys and they didn't seem to have the same issues. They will be starting pre-K next year and have to be completely potty trained and I'm pretty sure the teacher isn't going to hold his birdie down for him Any advice would be appreciated.

On a side note my other son is very stubborn and refuses to go on the potty. He will have to be completely trained before September when he goes to school, too. Do you think I should get a little more hard core on him now to push him to do it, or would you wait until the summer right before he goes to school to get more hard core. We are moving in about a month, then moving in with inlaws for 6 weeks until we finally make it into our new house in middle of June. My thought was to wait until we are in our new house and just push the potty training, my only problem with that is if he resists and won't do it, he will be the only one not gonig to school in September. Any thoughts?

Thanks, sorry for the long post.

Does he use a potty ring or just sit on the big toilet? My son was taught sitting on the ring and he was taught to hold himself down, aiming for the water. He doesn't close his legs. I had to make sure his pants were down enough at first but I didn't have to hold his penis down. He did that himself. The standing and aiming came later. We didn't really teach that. He learned from the other boys at preschool.

I wouldn't push the whole potty training thing with your other son until you get in your new house unless he shows signs that he is ready earlier. We started training my son in June and he was ready for school in September. A few more months of maturity will likely help.

I would not start traing the other one until after the move in June. I am with the other person, try a potty ring. I use a potty ring for my son and he does pretty good with it. He will push his wee wee down on his own but only if he is on the potty ring or little potty seat. If I sit him on the toilet by himself with no ring he can't keep his balance long enough to push it down. I have hard time getting him to pee in public because he really needs a potty ring to go and I really don't want to carry one with me at all times.

You might be surprised by trying standing. I assumed mine would learn sitting, but daycare taught them standing, and they never had issues, even when they were shorter. They'd just stand on their tip-toes. (Or a very very low stool.)

Even now, when they pee while sitting (because they're pooping) they get pee all over their pants like you describe. Yeesh!

(PS Mine have "birds" too. )

I second that. Try standing. It really is workable...I think much better than sitting. My boys do great. Give it a little time for them to get used to aiming...it should improve pretty quick.

I have a question for the ones that are suggestioning standing up. My little boy is so small that his chest hits where the toliet his. I can use a stool when we are at home but in public there is no way that he could stand. I think this is where I am having problems getting him to pee in public. Do you have any suggestions?

When you are in public, have him stand ON the toilet. I used to hold mine on the toilet because once they learned to stand and pee, then would not sit.

We taught ALL our kids to lean forward (almost laying on their thighs) when sitting to avoid pee coming up and out.

We taught our son to sit at home, stand in public. After seeing what my best friend went through with her triplet boys, I decided I wasn't having a little boy peeing at home all over the toilet, floor, walls, shower curtain, etc.

When I first potty-trained my son (my only boy) he was very young, less than 2-1/2 and he used a potty chair, that was the only way he didn't make a mess. For quite a while I helped him point down when he had to sit on the big toilet (he has always been a "sitter" at home). Somewhere in the 3-4 age range he was able to sit on the big toilet independently and point down. At preschool, there are kid urinals and all the boys just stand in front of them and pee (sometimes more than one at one time!!)

I am glad, at this point, that I taught him to sit at home because he very very rarely makes a mess. Not so with other boys, according to my triplet mom friends. For him, sitting = pee in the potty, and I am happy with that!

Thanks for making me chuckle on a Monday morning.

I have all girls, but I have friends with boys who told me they put a couple Cheerios in the toilet and the boy has to aim for those -- could do that sitting or standing. It makes it into a game. It might work or totally backfire on you and teach them to throw cereal in the toilet...

2 of my trio are still not PT, we are just giving them more time. I can't wait for the day, but it just doesn't seem to help to try and push them, at least not in our case. Good luck!
