#487956, "vacation spots for toddlers?"

Because of a cancelled trip this past Feb, we have airline tickets that we have to use before the end of August. We have to fly Delta from Minneapolis. I already looked up the prices for our top choices (Maine/ New England and Oregon/Washington) and it is too much for what our tix are worth. (we can spend about 370/ticket) . I'd rather steer clear on Disney and BIg/ crowded areas. The best scenario would be to go somewhere with water and a low key condo in a low key town... but picturesque. Any good spots you can think of? (My kids will be 2 1/2 this summer) Relaxing would be great since it will be hectic enough already. Thanks for any ideas! Martha

Are you planning on renting a car/van once you arrive at your destination? If so, my advice is to look at our lovely beaches of southern Lake Michigan.
Lots of very sweet small towns, beautiful dunes and beaches, and little downtowns filled with quaint shops and ice cream parlors.
We usually use vrbo.com or homeaway.com because we prefer to rent houses rather than hotels or condos but I am sure you can find some small cottages or condos in some of the cities.
Look at- Michigan City, IN Beverly Shores, IN Union Pier, MI New Buffalo, MI (has small playground on beach) Bridgman, MI South Haven, MI St. Joeseph, MI (has several playgrounds on beach, a splash pad and carousal just behind the beach) Grand Haven MI
Fly into South Bend IN and all the beaches are only 1 hour away. Good luck.

These are really neat places. Michigan City is very close to Chicago if you would want to visit the aquarium. Grand Haven is close to Saugatauk, another nice little town but more of an artist colony. My grandkids, including the triplets now 6, love St. Joe. Every year they have a 'theme' and there are statues around town. One year dogs, one year zoo animals, etc. They also have a Curious Kids Museum that is absolutely awesome - although your guys may be a little young. Great splash pad! The pizza place on the beach is great along with a unique toy store downtown and fun ice cream shops. You might check our some old copies of Midwest Living as they often feature one of these neat towns.

If you are thinking about the east coast, Stone Harbor, Cape May or Sea Isle City New Jersey are all family friendly beach locations. I know Stone Harbor has private beaches, but tags are attainable from the township and a lot of the people that rent their homes provide the tags. I have gone to stone harbor almost every summer of my life. It has a big playground at one end of the town, a cute little town, mini golf and beautiful beaches. Cape May County zoo is really close and has always been a favorite of mine. There is also a wetlands institute just off of the island that is fun to check out!I think what I like best is that it is quiet and a relaxed environment. I may even be crazy enough to take our little ones there this year in august of september!
Hope that helps! ~Jennifer~ Madelynn - 2.5 years old ID Boys - 6/5/12 (35 weeks) Daniel - 5 lbs 7 oz Ryder - 4 lbs 8 oz Garrett - 5 lbs 8 oz

That sounds very nice. We live in upstate New York, and plan to drive to our vacation destination. We are definately going to stay on the East Coast. New Jeresey would be an easy drive for us. By the way, congratulations on the upcoming birth of your triplets! Best of luck to you. This website has lots of helpful information from others, but you do not truly know what it's like until you experience life with triplets. It's amazing. Julie

I live in the Seattle area and it is a great place to visit/vacation. My question is: do you want the 2/12 year olds to get IN the water? The water around here stays pretty chilly and most beaches are rocky and not too sandy.
If you want pacific coast sandy beach area, with a nice flat beach for kiddies to wade in and play with sand shovels... check out Seabrook. I think if you Google Seabrook and vacation cottage rentals, it'll bring up some good info.
If you do downtown Seattle, there are places to do kid-friendly things. The Space Needle is good, but be aware they do not permit strollers up there. Right next to the Space Needle are the Pacific Science Center (good for kids around 4 yrs and up) and the Seattle Children's Museum (good place to let them go a little crazy), and the EMP (Experience Music Project). There is a monorail right there that goes to downtown shopping and hotels(the kids will ride free). Not far from the Seattle Center is the waterfront, with Pike Place Market, the Aquarium, and ferries to islands.
If your family has passports, you could hop a Clipper vacation boat from the Seattle waterfront and go to Victoria, BC Canada. It is very nice there, you don't need a car to get around. Even though it's not billed as a whale watching tour, when we have been on the Clipper we usually see Orcas in the summer.
Seattle also has some interesting walking trails, a large ChinaTown, an outdoor sculpture park, many art museums (my kids have enjoyed the Seattle Art Museum since they were around 20 months old), and lots of other attractions.
Have a good vacation! Sheila GGB 10/29/06 (33 weeks)
