#488158, "Julie Tupler and diastisis recti exercises"

I was just wondering if the exercises for diastisis recti were worth doing or if I should go see a doc. I think my diastisis is 2 fingers wide but it seems like it is pretty deep. Just wondering what your experiences have been. My back hurts on a regular basis if I pick up my kids. When they were born I had back spasms all the time. Our changing table was at an ackward height and once that was brought up a couple of inches the spasms pretty much went away. I just want to be able to take care of my kids and house without feeling like crap all the time. THanks again for any info you may have. If any of you don't even know about Julie Tupler, she seems to be the only person that specializes of diastisis recti ( the seperation between your abdomen muscles as a result of pregnancy).

Thanks for any information.

God bless!
Linda

Living Strong website has some exercise ideas for this problem . I am 10 years out from my c section and I am finally getting around to looking into this myself. I do not have first hand experience but it is worth a shot,

Hi Linda,

YES!!! The exercises are very much so worth doing. How old are your babies now?

I have 18-month old BBG triplets. My diastis was 3cm wide and I had what I described as the worst back and hip pain. What saved me was not just physical therapy, but aquatherapy with the focus on biofeedback. It's very important you get a physical therapist that is familiar with biofeedback. Just ask your doctor (either your OB our your primary care) for a referral. (If anyone reading this is pregnant, start now during pregnancy and continue postpartum!)

If you take your core re-building seriously, it is possible to be pain free AND have visible abs. Start with physical therapy and move onto yoga then whatever inspires you. For me it's endurance sports. I know it's hard to find time (I also work full time - so, my training happens at 4am, before the family wakes up). It is hard at first, but it's SO worth it.

As for the changing table... I have a "Arms Reach" that I use as a changing table. It's actually one of those co-sleepers. But, I have it set up as a stand alone thing. It has additional blocks/inserts to make it taller (I'm 5'10") and I don't have to bend over much when I use it. Because it's a co-sleeper, it has sides that prevent babies from rolling off and it's large enough to allow you to store diapers and wipes on the surface. It might even be cheaper than an actual changing table.
