#488250, "Safe Kiddie Pool?"

Is there such a thing as a safe above ground (small) pool? We recently visited family and the boys played in a 2 foot, above ground, inflatable pool and LOVED it. My husband would like to get one but I am skeptical because of safety. Do any come with covers? What have others done?

Thanks,

Jennifer

You can never be to safe around a pool. With that said, I have do have an inflatable pool and a 4ft above ground pool. I never let my kids outside while the little pool is filled without me. They love it. When we do go swimming in the big pool, they wear life jackets and I am always with them. We also have a gate around the big pool so they cannot enter it by themselves. My kids will be 3 next month and they love going swimming. I was extremly nervous last year with them and the pool but the more confidence they got and showed me that they were ok, the better I felt. This year is great, they swim and I am not nervous at all.

We use an inflatable pool with our boys (2.5 yo), and we did with our older kids as well (the older ones are 4 and 7 and still love it). As for safety, we are always out there when the kids are out there. We only fill the pool when we are using it and then we dump the water after we are done. I guess that's "wasteful", but this ensures no accidental drownings from our kids or a neighbor kid who happens to come by. Smaller pools are obviously much easier to dump than larger inflatable ones! We have a pretty big inflatable pool now that is a pain to dump, but it's so worth it because the boys love the pool and it's often the only thing we can do to burn energy on a hot day. HTH!

The boys turned 3 in March and our older son is 10.

Thanks for the feedback!

We got our first above ground pool when our kiddos were two. We would just fill it to below their head and they could walk all around in it. We put a safety gate around our first one. As they got older, we upgraded every year so that we could fill it more. We'd just buy them end of season for the following year.

My kids were swimming very early. I thought they were very safe. All they had to do was stand up and their head was above the water.
