#492, "Trying to gain weight"

12 weeks today.

Am changing peri groups since we changed from an HMO to a EPO effective January 1. The peri group I was seeing offered no suggestions for how to put on weight, despite my concern. Have gained 1-2 lbs this first trimester. Been trying to use some of the recommendations in Dr. Luke's book, but it's really hard eating that much food. Started the pregnancy at about 100 lbs, and I know that I need to provide the babies more - but with the nausea and feeling full after only a few bites, I'm just so stressed about not being able to eat!

Any advise would help. Especially those who had to fight nausea while trying to put on the lbs.
Thanks,
HC

I had the same exact problem you are having when I was between 10 - 16 weeks pregnant. The good news is that since the nausea has gone away I have gained about 45lbs.

I tried taking prescription Zantac but that did not help me much. My doctor put me on a pump that gave me anti-nausea medicine that worked very well. The medicine irritated my skin after a couple of weeks so I had to stop it but by that time most of my nausea was gone and I had an appetite again.

Don't worry!! Your body will put on the weight. When your doctor does your ultrasounds you will see if your babies are measuring a good size for their age. I was lucky and no matter how little weight I gained, the babies always measured right on their gestational age. That is what is really important! The babies find a way of getting what they need even if the mommy has to do without for a little while. I hope your babies are growing and measuring according to their age too!

Good luck!
Vicki

I remember worrying about weight at your stage also. At 14 weeks I had lost 10 lbs. from my pre-pregnancy weight, but dr. said that was normal with all the hormones adjusting, morning sickness, and babies taking all they needed from me! As long as your babies are growing and doing well I wouldn't worry. I am now 22 weeks and have gained 18 lbs. so far,and now weight gain has been no problem. I did have a consult with a nutritionist and was advised to eat small meals every 1-2 hrs. and make wise food decisions( cottage cheese, ice cream, fruits, vegetables, and drink at least 3 big glasses of milk). I know Dr. Luke's book says this, but the nutritionist said eat what you can-small frequent meals, protein and stay hydrated and I'm sure your babies will do fine! Hang in there- the weight will come.Hope this helps put your mind at ease.

I would suggest going to a nutritionist. My practice had someone that worked for them and the hospital. However, I was only able to gain 9 lbs during my pregnancy . I was on high protein jellos and ensure shakes. I know that I was not the average because my Dr. wanted me to gain between 60-80lbs. However, my babies were growing and doing well. That is the main concern. I wish you lots of luck and a wonderful pregnancy.

Hi,

I had the same problem. I gained about 4 pounds in the first about 16 weeks. Now I'm gaining about 1 pound every two days- more or less. I think sitting around on bedrest helps, but also the nausea is gone. And I seem to be ravenously hungry almost always!I just ate as much as I could during those first months. And anything that made me feel better. I couldn't adhere to what the books say, because those foods were making me sick, and making me eat less. I ate alot of potato chips, salami, and peaches. : )

Good luck to you,

kendra

I lost quite a bit of weight in my first trimester due to pretty bad morning sickness, but I finally started gaining eventually. I put on a total of 60 lbs. (from my pre-pg weight). My peri had me drink an Ensure after every meal. I really had to force-feed myself (and the Ensure wasn't easy to get down), but I managed somehow.

Just think high protein, high fat, and high calorie. If something appeals to you, eat it. Forget if it's nutritionally sound or whatever, logic like that doesn't work with constant nausea & food aversions. If you want canned peaches, eat them. Ice cream, cheesecake - go for it! If you're into meat, wolf it down. If you can tolerate milk, try whole milk. If you can manage a gallon a day you will be taking in LOTS of fluids, calories, protein, and fat! Add in Carnation Instant Breakfast and a scoop or two of whey protein powder if you can. Drink an Ensure or two every day. Eat a can of cashews. If all you can stand is chips & salsa, then eat it! I found that going with my cravings worked far better than trying to adhere to a diet which literally made me sick.

You will know you are doing well if the babies are growing well on your ultrasounds. Your body may not be gaining a lot of weight, but the babies can. My final weight gain was 35 pounds. I went up to 40 pounds but lost 5 at the end due to extreme m/s. Yet despite that paltry gain two of my babies were over 5 pounds, and one was 4.12!

Hi HC. I worked throughout my pregnancy to try to gain weight. I was also diabetic for the last few months so had to ce careful about where those calories came from. I was sick throughout the pregnancy about 5-6 days/week at 1-2 times/day as well. I only gained about 24 lbs but the doctor assured me that the babies were fine. I also read about it. Women's bodies store up fat even before pregnancy as nature's way of ensuring that a baby will have what it needs. You will be fine. Protein is the key though. Work on getting as much as possible wherever you can and whatever of those foods you can handle- eggs, meat, peanut butter. I bet you could find some good information online if you aren't interested in seeing a nutrienist. You might want to check the local hospitals. Many offer a class on nutriention during pregnancy for a pretty good cost or possibly free through insurance. Good luck!

hi hc...at 12 weeks i had gained 3 pounds, and at 19 weeks i had gained 20. my body suddenly seemed more open to the concept of gaining weight. and like others have suggested, i went with cravings and the ensure shakes, which REALLY helped.

please don't feel guilty, and if the scales are depressing you, put them away. you don't need this.

When I wasn't feeling good, ice cream always helped. yum! Eat up! Custard has a higher fat count. I would drink the Carnation instant breakfast at every meal too. It has more nutrition and calories for you. At 12 weeks, it is still early to be concerned. Really. Honestly. If you were 18 weeks I would be, but right around 12 weeks is when I actually started feeling pregnant. I was in normal clothes at least until 10 weeks. So you are fine. If the peri's office isn't offering suggestions, it could be because they aren't concerned. I would watch the junk food like chips and candy bars, but all else is fair game!

Congratulations and good luck!
