#536, "bottles and sleeping in their own beds?!"

My 13 almost 14 month old twins are very attached to their bottles and rarely sleep through the night in their own beds. My now 6 (almost 7) year old triplets were not like my twins at all. Who ever would have thought that after having three we would be taking the easy road with the two. I know that we probably need to let the twins cry and not bring them into our bed in the middle of the night. But, when sleep is required it is so much easier. Now I am afraid we have developed some bad habits that are going to be hard to break. One of the twins will usually wake and want a bottle (which I know we also need to work on giving up) but then is easy to put back in her own bed if we are awake enough to do it. The other twin wakes up and just wants to be held. She is a great sleeper in our bed or on our shoulder. They are sharing a room which is another reason we try not to have one cry to long in the middle of the night. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried letting the twins sleep together? Maybe the closeness of her sister would help the one who wants to sleep with you. And switch from a midnight bottle to a midnight sippycup that you leave in her crib so she can find it without waking you up.

Wow I could not even imgaine what you go through in a day. I am sure you have to just do things differnt to get things done but if you have let them sleep together this long it's not going to be easy to split them up. It's really time to start considering getting rid of the bottle and soon before they decide they don't want to give it up. With already having three I am sure you know the tricks. I have to agree with the above poster, I give my girls a sippy cup of water just before I shut out the lights and so they have it with them all the time for middle of the night drinks. I tend to bring the toddler who wakes up from a nightmare to bed w/ me simply b/c I am not really thinking clearly at night. Once dawn break I can only groan at my bad choice as someone is jumping on my stomach or pulling on the hair. If this is something that frequently occurs get their ears looked at sounds like an earache. If this is something they do everynight since they were babies you might want to pull out the PNP and set them in that slowly each night moving it closer to their room. Worth a shot. Then again go cold turkey at this age they know "no" and if you don't come that means "not tonight".

Take Care

Thank you for the suggestions. I guess there is no easy way about it, we are going to have to skip some sleep and they are going to have to cry and learn to sleep in their own beds and give up the bottle. I know it sounds strange to ask about this with these being my "5th and 6th" children. But, my triplets were nothing like these two. They were awesome sleepers. By four months they were sleeping through the night and they took two good naps. My twins take one good nap and have never been great through the night. The first three months or more we battled colic and reflux. Nights were not pleasant. So we fell into some bad habits just to get sleep. Now it is fairly guaranteed that they will be in our bed before morning. Thanks again!
