Just wondering if everyone uses them? Is this something I should be getting my niece?

Thanks,

I think it's only a minority of HOM women who can use/tolerate the maternity belts for very long. Not only are they quickly outgrown, but if on bedrest they aren't very helpful. Also, some babies will not allow the mother to wear the belt (my Baby A would kick viciously until I took mine off).

A support should certainly be offered to your niece, but if she doesn't want it, or doesn't wear it much, then it's kind of a waste of about $50.00.

I bought mine at Sears - it wasn't very expensive - just went below my belly - no shoulder straps. I loved it. I immediately felt relief in my back. It was well worth the purchase for me - but she wouldn't use it on bedrest, only when up and about.

I bought a $50 one that included the shoulder straps and it was a waste of money. Yes, it felt good when I first put it on, but it soon started digging in to my lower abdomen. I could only stand to wear it for an hour or so.

I used one of these occasionally when I was at work and although it helped my lower back a bit, it was scratchy and uncomfortable. I didn't use it enough and wouldn't suggest you buying one unless she tries it on and thinks she'd really wear it. By the way, I got mine at Motherhood Maternity wear if you want to go to a shop and check one out.

I used one with my singleton and it saved my life - I could not stand or walk without it for more than 5 minutes. I credit it for being able to work until the last day. However, with my triplet pregnancy I could not tolerate it at all. It made me short of breath, and so did the belly pillow. Luckily, I was on bedrest so walking and standing were not an issue.

I got one free of charge due to my insurance. They recommended it and paid for it. It was scratchy buy I would always a tank top under it. I also used during the time when I was still working or if I would go out shopping, if just at home, not on my feet, I wouldnt wear it. I am in the Atlanta area, if you are anywhere near, you could have it.
Congratulations on the pending birth!!!

Hi Clare,

I have the basic velcro strap belt from Motherhood Maternity. I personally really like the belt and it does help to relieve some muscle fatigue. I only wear the belt if I am up...not when lying down. I am 28 weeks now and I am sure that eventually I will outgrow it (the belt is an extra large!) You could take your neice to motherhood maternity and have her try the belt on to see if she notices a difference.

I used a belt while I was working or up on my feet. It was very useful for me before and after pregnancy. I got a prescription from my doctor and insurance covered it. Your niece should ask if her insurance would cover this. Either way, a medical supply stores would be the best place to get it.

Hope this helps. Best of luck for you niece!!
