you're not nuts, but you are a superstar. it will be hectic, sure, but having the video is a smart idea and you know, it is only one night of your life. instead of making them pancakes and bacon, why not just go with eggos? much easier for you. problem with buying lots of sugar cereals is they will each want half a scoop of five different brands, and make huge messes.
again, it will be a birthday to remember, and you are being wonderful. xo tess

Hi, I've been dong this for my oldest (12 in Oct) since he was 8. We have them about every three months and his friends love it! (Parents think we are crazy too) My feeling is: what the heck only 6 or 7 more! AS for breakfast, do the little cereal pack thing, alot of kids are pretty poor eaters and you may go to all that trouble for nothing! Good luck and happy napping the next day!

HI Taunee,
You are NOT nuts. We do this too. I think it is very important to let the older kids have the life they want as much as possible (within reason!!) One of the things we CAN do for them is let them have sleepover parties on their birthday. I usually limit it to 4 kids, although I let one boy have 5 once so he would not have to leave one of his good friends out. We start after dinnertime - about 7:00. Tell the guests to eat a light dinner if at all. I order pizza at about 9:00, then they open presents and have cake. Sometimes a child can not sleep over and I have them stay till 10:00, this way they catch the main party stuff. They do have friends who are not allowed to sleep over and this works great. They can play as wild as they want till about midnight. They have to let the little brothers play for awhile - with the 5 year old till 9:00, with the 10 year old till 10:30 (for example). After that the brothers have to leave them alone unless invited. NO BEGGING!!! LOL! (By the way, the babies go down at their regular bedtime, so far.)
DH goes to bed early and wears earplugs! After midnight, they turn to quiet play. Sometimes we let them stay up all night and sometimes they need to go to bed (someone has to go somewhere the next day). I always poll the parents on this. If one needs to go to bed, they all do, though I do not police whether they go to sleep. At bedtime we put in a video and make popcorn. They will go to sleep or not (usually will) but they have to lie down. If I am allowing them to stay up all night, they play quiet stuff in their room. Believe it or not I have not had them be loud enough to wake me up! I go to bed a little after midnight, after seeing to it that they have quiet things to do. Video games or board games, looking at card collections, etc.Wear earplugs! That way you can sleep but will be able to wake up in an emergency.
They usually sleep late in the morning. I like to end it by 9:00 so we wake them at about 8:00 for breakfast. This way I get plenty of sleep too. DH will cook if he feels like it - pancakes is the favorite. If yours won't be there, I would opt for the cereal. They alwasy love those little boxes. Maybe some fruit too. Then they have a few minutes to play before their parents come. It will be great for you to have your niece there - piece of cake!
You didn't ask, but I have taken to buying party favors from the dollar store. The older kids don't need those goodie bags. Dollar Tree here has lots of cool toys for $1. WHen they break, it was so cheap no one cares. Also last time I bought them each a bag of candy from there, a HUGE hit! I buy pizza, make a cake, they drink Koolaid, and have popcorn. That is my only expense. It has really worked out great and I actually like doing it!!
Throughout the year they will have ONE friend sleep over for no reason and we work it pretty much the same way. I usually a, in bed at my usual time.
So you are not nuts, and we are not heroes!! LOL Just regular moms. Let me know how it goes!

Taune, its so funny to read your post because my DS has had a Stars Wars sleep over his last 2 birthdays (Dec 9, he turned 9). The great thing about boys is they dont need any planning to have fun. His first party Ihad planned a bunch of "great things" but boys would rather run and play. So at this years party everybody brought swords and played in the backyard. We live in CA so my kids play outside all year long. I think youll see its a lot less work than you think. My ggg's are 4 and the day they ask for a sleepover (poor mom!!!)Good Luck!!
