#2357, "Celiac Disease"

A question for those with children or other family members with celiac disease. When were they diagnosed and what were their symptoms? I have just started to worry about my Emma and am now wondering if she might have celiac disease. She has many of the symptoms and she really has issues we haven't been able to solve.

I have asked her cardiologist (who we see Friday) to run this test. I don't know if he will or not but I truly want to either rule it out or know if she has it.

If she does have it what will I be looking at as far as diet, maintenance, problems, etc?

Thanks so much. I hope we don't add this to her long list of medical problems but want to know for sure.

Hi
One of my sons has not been officialy diagnosed but his Ped feels 90% sure he has it. I'm not sure why you would have a cardiologist check that. It's not related to the heart at all. Generally the Ped or an allergy specialist does that. They usually do a simple blood test to see if there are antibodies present against gluten. My son had been on a gluten free diet long enough that the blood test would not be accurate. The alternative is a colon byopsy that I would not agree to do. My sons symptoms are constant diarhia and vomiting, severe reflux and a general dislike of food and eating. Also stunted growth and development delay issues are also present. If your child has celiac disease as opposed to gluten intolerance, they have to be on their diet their whole life.

The diet means eliminating all wheat, rye, oat and barley products including any derivitive from those products. If she needs to be casien free as well, that means no dairy or derivitve. It's tough but there are support groups and great websites on celiac. I am amazed at how many products are in my grocery store now.

Sorry so long. Hope it helps! Contact me anytime about this
