#2932, "Listening Therapy--anyone tried it?"

We went to a place that does Dynamic Listening. From what they say I think my two sensory kids would really benefit from it. They said they have seen amazing results with kids. My husband actually had this after an accident where he had neurological damage. Workers comp even paid for it. It helped him so I know this therapy works. I was just wondering if anyone had used it with success.

Thanks

I'm not sure if it was called "listening therapy" or "music therapy", but at my ds's previous school, they used this with his OT, and I was told it was very helpful. I did see an improvement, but not sure if it was from this or just the OT in general. He does not receive it anymore, and is doing quite well, though. At the previous school, I was told it was very expensive.

Good luck.

What do you mean by lisening therapy? Is it with special equipment and modulated music or just music in cunjuction with OT? There is also audio integration therapy. We have done the 1st 2 and not AIT. The modulated music helps my son greatly but also makes him highly agressive. The music and OT combined works better. We have not done AIT. It has some known negative side effecs (from our OT).

I think they called it Dynamic Listening Therapy. There is a program called the Listening Program that is similar. They use the different ranges of sound with Mozart, since it is very rich music. While the kids are listening with open air headphones on they are doing sensory play. They can tailor it to each child and what they need. They do an eval first. It sounds great but I didn't know if anyone had used this for their kids on here. My husband had an accident years ago and they used an older version of this with him. He couldn't believe the difference he experienced. I didn't even realize this is what he had until we were there and they mentioned the therapy he had.

Yes, we have tried Listening Therapy with our autistic son.
Our school district paid for it and we went faithfully for all the blocks.
I will say this, it was a good therapy but the carryover was short lived.
I feel this therapy needs to be ongoing and not just stop when the blocks have been completed.
Great results when in the therapy and not so great carryover months and years later once therapy ended.
If the therapy is paired with other types of therapy then perhaps carryover could be improved.
Too it depends on the disorder that one is dealing with as well.

Jessica--do you remember what therapy you used? Was it the Tomatitis(sp?) one? The therapists we spoke to said the same thing as you about the Tomatitis method. They have a son that used to go for that therapy and said it needed maintenance visits. This is a new therapy that the benefits do not go away. We are going to give it a shot. What types of results did you see? My kids that will be going have sensory issues and my son is delayed in speech. I am just willing to try just about anything at this point!

Kristin-
It was the Tomatis Method. Our son did good with it for all the blocks and even saw an improvement in his behavior in other settings.
You mention someone elses son who did well with it and had carryover but remember every child is different from the next even their disorder may be different.
Its been my son's history with any therapy that if he doesn't have ongoing therapy all the time that he will regress.
This is just my son however. I am sure it varies from child to child.
Giving it a try is worth is I couldnt agree more.
I like to say that I would turn to Voodoo cards if they would change my son for the better.

HTH
