#3215, "Autism, medications and seizures"
|
My son has moderately/severe autism. He was diagnosed 4 years ago and we have been running an ABA program since his diagnosis. He has always been inattentive and has always had some OCD issues. In April, we started seeing a developmental pediatrician to try medications to help him in school. He responds to extremely low doses of meds. He did pretty good on 2.5 mg of Adderall. He still has OCD issues that are becoming unacceptable. His current obsession in cell phones and he will put his hands in men's pockets looking for a cell phone or try to grab a stranger's purse. He is 4 feet tall and 6 years old, so strangers don't find it amusing. We started him on 5 mg of Prozac to try to control the OCD. The evening after his second morning dose, I found him unresponsive in the guest room bed. While we were waiting for the paramedics to arrive, he stopped breathing. We are assuming he had a tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure. He had an EEG, EKG, MRI, etc and all tests came back essentially normal. We don't have a follow up with neurology until 8/6. He was playing his game boy in a dark room when I found him, so we think it may have a photosensitivity. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks, Colleen Mom to Connor, Alec & Devon 5/10/2001

Hi Colleen, I have to run but wanted to give you some info re garding OCD meds we have used for our now 8 year old son. He is on the spectrum and had real bad ocd. After trying to get it under control without meds and not succeding at 4 years old we started him on celexa. It is a liquid that I put in a little juice and he drinks it. Anyway it has worked well for him and as he has grown we have had to up the dosage when we saw some issues arising.
Sorry I did not have any infor on the seazures for you but I just wanted to share our experience with the celexa since it seemed the meds you have him on are not working for that.
good luck. If you need more info you can e mail me or pm me.
