#3273, "SID and potty training"

Is there a correlation between sensory issues and difficulty with potty training in children? I ask because my DS is late with potty training and I believe he has some sensory issues. Is it possible that he is not feeling the sensation to go because he has decreased sensitivity related to SID? Thanks for any info.

Hi there!

I've noticed nobody has answered. All I can say is, YES, it is possible that SID has a hand in late potty training and he may not be feeling the sensation. I am also having trouble potty training my DS with SID. We're stillworking on it, but he's getting better. I did read something about ti somewhere. I will try to find the information and forward it to you. Good luck!

Definitely. My son had SID and low muscle tone. I had two pediatricians tell me that children like my son tend to potty train late. They told me not to worry about it until the summer he turned four and then if he wasn't trained by about 4 1/2 then we could worry about it. He was potty trained just before his fourth birthday. It didn't take too long, but you could tell he really had to think about it more consciously than the other two did.
