#3316, "Yeast overgrowth (Candida) with Autism"
Thu Sep-27-07 10:00 PM by jmomee99

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this with their autistic child and if ridding the body of it helped. Anyone else see Jenny McCarthy on Larry King last night? Her son has autism and this was what helped him.

If anyone has experience with this I would love to hear.

I'm going to ask the GI doctor next week. We have an appointment anyway so it's good timeing.

Thanks!

Julie~ My sister has done TONS of research on candida (which she had). No one in her family is autistic, so I can't speack to that, but she is always willing to share her experiences. Shes gone the naturopathic route and according to her Dr, her candida is MUCH better than it was. If you have any questions for her, or think it might be helpful to contact her, let me know and I"ll get you the information.

I just finished reading her book about 10 minutes ago. It is eye opening and amazing. She also ends the book with contact info for things she learned. She said that to rid Evan of the candida they started him on Diflucan for a few weeks but then switched to a natural supplement ThreeLac (which does the same thing). She also said that the detox off the yeast was horrid. Her son would have complete meltdowns when he was about to rid himself of large amounts of the yeast. The result however was amazing! He began having conversations when she did this detox.

It is an easy read (I finished it in two days), and completely worth your time.

I just ordered one of the books she suggested called "What your DR might not tell you about children's vaccinations" She says that it has some great info on vaccines and their impact plus offers an alternative vaccination schedule.

Julie I work for the Author of this book http://bodyecology.com/autism.php She works with many children with Autism and is doing endless reasearch on Autism. The children she works with really benefit from the diet. Here is a link to a yahoo support group for using the Body Ecology Diet to recover children from Autism, developmental disorders, candida, digestion problems, allergies, and weak immune systems. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/beginnerBEDROK/

I hope you find this information helpful.

Julie,

We used Nystatin to treat yeast for quite a while. It worked well, decreased stimming, obsessing and helped regulate appetite somewhat. We also use probiotics which are great for gut health. With the probiotics I notices a decrease in her stomach bloating and constipation. Hope that helps, good luck with the GI doc., some of them get the autism/gut connection and some don't. Our DAN doctor was the one who finally worked with us on the stomach issues and really helped us make progress.

Jessica,

You mentioned Nystatin helped with stimming. We had a Nystatin cream when my son had a horrible diaper rash. Are you talking about an oral Nystatin?

thanks!

Kristin

Kristin,

Yes, it was a Nystatin pill. My dd had the same horrible diaper rash problems, almost looked like a burn, and in our years now working on yeast I have found that that was an early sign of yeast overgrowth.

I wish they would have prescribed that for my son back then! We just got the cream and were told to use an over the counter probiotic, but not referred to any one brand. The poor kid couldn't even sit without crying or take a bath. It was horrible! and the cream was tough to get on him since you were touching what was raw. We had gone through strep and the antibiotics that come with it four times in less than a year. Yet, probiotics weren't even mentioned until the horrible rash.

Thanks!
Kristin

Forgot to mention, a great book to read on all of this is "Children with Starving Brains" by Jaqueline McCandless. It really helped me tie it all together.

Yes, probiotics helped us with yeast overgrowth. Be forwarned, the yeast die-off is HORRIBLE. It was 14 days of blow-out diarrhea, But it did help. I really recommend this book and website: Healing the New Childhood Epidemics. It really helps lay out info about biomedical treatments (what JM was referring to on Oprah). Dr. BOck is a practicing physician who treats autistic children, so his info is GREAT. Here's his site.
