#3389, "what brings you to this forum"

For those of you who don't know me - probably most of you don't know me- i am an old timer and and haven't been around lately- too much going on and too stressed I am the one who requested that the special needs forum be started here at TC.
I am curious what special needs your kids have ?

All three of my kids have had medical problems and many many years of OT and PT but one son- Braden has had very severe problems. He is doing well considering the severity of his problems (was given pretty much no hope of survivng..)
He has short bowel syndrome (3/4 + of his small bowel removed) and no ileocecal valve- the result of NEC
he has liver disease (PSC) as a consequence of ongoing bacterial overgrowth problems
he also has an immune deficiency that requires him to get monthly immunoglobulin infusions
he has the FAP (familial polyposis) gene that guarantees colon cancer at some point and puts him at high risk for other GI cancers
he has pancreatic insufficiency
osteopenia
he is gtube dependant for his nutrition (he does eat during the day but doesn't seem to absorb the food at all)
doctors are disagreeing about the timing of the need for intestinal/liver transplants.....
the list goes on and there is constant balancing act

oh and my kids are 11 years old and I am smack dab in the middle of tweendom....much more challenging than I had imagined !!!

Hi I haven't posted in a while. All 3 of my trips are special needs. All have ADHD, one has OCD, one has Tourettes Syndrom and the other has autism, gluten intolerance (never had him tested for celiac) and oral and verbal apraxia.

I like reading the posts from time to time, for hope and support. I am a working single parent so time is precious to me. Keep up the good work everyone

Hi Chris~
This may or may not be useful to you, but I figured I'd pass it along. Very recently my nephew was havings TICS and exhibiting behaviour which the drs believed could be Tourettes. My nephew (who is 4) has had many health issues thus far, some of which (digestive issues) the drs. believed could be due to celiac disease. My sister is a researcher and came across information that said if celiac is left untreated (if people don't take the gluten out) it can actually be the cause of tics (and tourette like syptoms), as well as OCD? So... my sister took gluten out if his diet and within a week, the tics (which were occuring ALL DAY LONG, are nearly non existent. She believes 100 percent that taking the gluten out is why they stopped. When I read your post, I just wanted to respond, b/c like I said, what she read mentioned OCD as well. Is it possible that your son with OCD has a gluten intolerance too? Just something to think about.

Sorry to ramble on!
